Fire doors on every door in our new house, why??

Hi

Just that really. We’ve moved into a house that was built in 2007. Two storey detached, normal loft with a drop down ladder. We want to change the doors as they are god awful, but a joiner pointed out they are all fire doors. Would we need to therefore replace them all with fire doors, which are hugely expensive? Or just the door from garage to internal?

Thanks x

Lucia OP hasn't got a loft conversion.

I looked up that Howdens door, and it is made for them by Jeld-Wen.

The seemingly identical door under Jeld-Wen branding is called a Newark

And is sold by Screwfix at £73.99

Though personally I don't like the fake woodgrain.

£240 my asre.

I put fire doors on all the downstairs doors simply because they're heavier and feel better quality than standard hollow doors. No need for them though.

I hate Howdens and their pricing system designed to help your builder make more money from you depending on what discount they pass along.

I had a full height decor end panel to use in my kitchen extension but my kitchen fitter managed to use a plinth turned sideways to fill the gap. He said you can return that decor end panel and get your £300 back, I told him it was £50 and from Ikea. He was shocked. Welcome to shopping around.

As the very knowledgeable PigletJohn has said, shop around, look at other suppliers of the doors. Depending on how "handy" you are you can buy a new door, lay the old one on top, transfer the hinge position, door latch etc and do all the joinery yourselves plus removing anything from the height if needed. If this is beyond your skills then a joiner can do it for you.

My doors have been widened for my wheelchair, for this reason I now have fire doors to my lounge & kitchen. As the couple were elderly maybe this is why?

Regulations must have changed. We did a loft conversion 2002 and only had to have the door into the one and only bedroom as a fire door. Put new doors downstairs but they didn't have to be fire doors. All signed off by building control. Not in England though.

Check with your house insurance.

MrsClatterbuck · 01/09/2021 09:53

We also got a mains alarmed fire system so that's maybe why

KihoBebiluPute · 01/09/2021 09:59

The existing doors are certainly ugly but the pic seens to show them as structurally sound so I would be repainting them rather than replacing them.

Thanks everyone. This has been such a help!

Thanks @PigletJohn. That’s really interesting.

Am in the process of finishing my loft conversion - we have had to have fire doors in some areas and a wired smoke alarm as the building inspector know most doors are kept open in family homes.
