Art Deco

I am intrigued by this art deco house. Would love to buy it but I would be worried about making changes to it. It’s like a museum.

Would you buy or would you think it’s too high maintenance?

I think it’s amazing, I would keep all the period features and just modernise the rest around it.

The kitchen isn’t original so that would go.

IdblowJonSnow · 30/08/2021 07:38

I love it. (Apart from one of the fireplaces).

It's very striking. Looks very loved and in amazing condition. How would it be any more high maintenance than any other large house?

rubyslippers · 30/08/2021 07:44

We have an Art Deco house - original windows, flooring, fireplaces, panelling, front door, original tiles & sanitary ware - kitchen modernised altho it has original tiles and windows

I love it - it’s why we bought the house. Windows are in good condition and have secondary glazing inside. - we have three chimney stacks which needed repointing but that’s fairly standard

Method floor cleaner is great for the parquet and not pricey - we haven’t found it more work. We are keeping all the features so no work in terms of ripping stuff out

The house you’ve linked to is amazing

HotChipss · 30/08/2021 07:50

I wonder why they’ve left that big wicker chair in front of the bath? Took me a second to work out that was actually the bath. That green is incredible.

The kitchen looks like 1950s/60s - I wonder why they replaced the original? I absolutely love the fireplace on page 13. It’s like an Art Deco dream

chatw0o0 · 30/08/2021 07:56

That bathroom is amazing! Also love the big fireplace and the parquet flooring.

The existing use of colour is a bit much for me though Grin
Easily rectified though.

Bythemillpond · 30/08/2021 07:59

The carpet is from the 70s.

It has the windows , bathroom and fireplace still Art Deco but everything else is from all other eras

leavesthataregreen · 30/08/2021 08:15

I like it. Once you have got rid of the oppressive paint schemes and lairy carpet (not at all art deco) the house would seem more soothing. The flooring does all look original. The parquet might be but some of the rest looks like laminate. I'd change that and put in parquet.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/08/2021 08:15

They’ve used a lot of period furniture which they’ll presumably take away, at which point the bedrooms and sitting room are blank canvases. I do NOT like the window treatments. The need to be replaced with straight curtains in Art Deco style fabric (

I also love the brickwork on the garage there - streamline moderne style rather than trad Art Deco

EmeraldGreenVelvet · 30/08/2021 08:25

Once you remove the owner's Art Deco furniture it will feel a lot less like a museum.
A couple of nice fireplaces, parquet floors and an nicely untouched exterior do not make an environment too special to live in.
The kitchen and bathroom are vintage in their own right but I think a bit later in date.

ThanksItHasPockets · 30/08/2021 08:33

Sorry to be pedantic but I think the EA is wrong to describe it as an Art Deco house. It is a Thirties house with Deco elements, such as the bathroom. Not all Thirties houses are Art Deco.

There’s nothing to be scared of. Once the current owners’ furniture is out (which is not faithfully Thirties and a bit of a mish-mash) it will feel much less like a museum. You would of course preserve the original features but much of it has already been changed - eg the bedroom flooring in #9, 10 and 17 isn’t original and is probably laminate or vinyl.

Have you viewed it?

Why2why · 30/08/2021 08:38

I haven’t viewed it yet. Went by to check out the area and the street two days ago.

It says the builder built it as Art Deco in the 1930s.

Art Deco is not my taste at all. Hate the fireplace. Spectacular bathroom though.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 30/08/2021 08:47

The bathroom is amazing but it reminds me of the bathroom out of "the shining" where he sees the old lady.

Equalpayquery · 30/08/2021 08:47

You can totally modernise around that house, keeping the fixed period features. It’s an absolute gem. We have a similarly sized house that is just at the crossover between Edwardian and Art Deco, and its really lovely to live in.

I don’t like the kitchen so I think I would knock that out and also have a bit of a look at the layout in that area. I would consider structural alterations in that whole space; there are ways of being sympathetic to the house by getting skirtings and architraves moulded to match the original.

Toning down the colour scheme - some lovely F&B/little greene neutrals and greens/blues would be lovely in that house.

If you can afford it (plus at least £100k because it may well need considerable modernisation to the services) then I would go for it.

ASimpleLobsterHat · 30/08/2021 08:47

I love it and would definitely be interested in it if I had enough money Grin The bathroom is fab. The wall colours in a lot of the rooms aren’t to my taste, but that’s easily rectifiable. I love Art Deco though - if you want inspiration check out the interiors of the Burgh Island hotel - that’s pretty faithfully Art Deco from what I can remember.

It’s a Thirties house with (absolutely beautiful) Art Deco internal features. It’s gorgeous. It wouldn’t be any more work than a similarly sized house of any other period.

Motherof3Dragons · 30/08/2021 09:03

I would not describe this house as «Art Deco «! It has some Art Deco features (the bathroom is amazing!) but other than that it is a bog standard 1930’s house, or am I missing something?

HotChipss · 30/08/2021 09:06

Some of those houses in the link are of the streamline moderne style - more emphasis on sleek curves, aerodynamic/smooth look.

BlueMongoose · 30/08/2021 09:07

Maintenance should be no different to any other house the same age. I agree with the poster further up the thread that the curtains (and some other things) would look nicer if they were more in period- lots of fabrics/covings/etc. are available that have the right sort of designs to work.

We have a 1920s house, but, sadly, just about all the original features have gone. In our case I see no point trying to put them back, and in some instances it wouldn't even be possible due to the way extensions have been built, so we're going for our own taste, which is partly Arts and Crafts and partly plain and modern. Very out of period. But in the end, it's our house, and we have to live here, so as it's hopefully our last house, we may as well have whatever we want regardless.
So we're having a modern oak kitchen, and a dark red Gothic 'library'.Grin

SoupDragon · 30/08/2021 09:14

I think the bathroom is absolutely hideous 😂

Other than that, I think it would be very easy to modernise around the features.

HeronLanyon · 30/08/2021 09:17

Friend of mine removed and replaced two bathrooms very similar to the one here. I’ve never forgiven him ! I’m not fond of too much Art Deco (and would not be able to rip it all out but would not want to live with too much) but that bathroom is an absolute joy.

ThanksItHasPockets · 30/08/2021 09:36

It's not a bad thing that the house is built in a more traditional style. The flat roofs and smooth render of Streamline Moderne buildings are an absolute nightmare to maintain.
OnGoldenPond · 30/08/2021 09:46

OMG that bathroom looks like the one in The Sining - the woman in the bath scene! Shock

Still love it though Grin

It's got a lot of lovely Art Deco features but not overwhelming. You can go with the theme as much or as little as you want. I've seen some Art Deco houses with masses of built in furniture and that is more overwhelming as you would feel unable to change it.

Go for it! I love Art Deco.
