dear everyone

hello....

im looking to relocate back to cornwall, most of the coastal
regions are just to expensive for my budget, and i wondered
what your thoughts were on Saint Austell.....

i ve seen a place already and very keen to to go and view
next week but also keen on peoples views of the area

love to hear what you have to say
for us this is about a permanent relocation, i'll be mortgage
and debt free so money wont be an issue at the end of it, need to be near doctors and amenities.

Chris & mum

Have you been there recently? I think you need to go and spend a good couple of weeks at least to see what you think of it.

How long since you last lived in Cornwall?

WeatherwaxLives · 29/08/2021 15:26

It's known within Cornwall as St Awful.

Will you be needing to find work locally? If yes then I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Same goes for Camborne and Redruth.

Have a watch of Simon Reeves TV show on Cornwall. He takes an honest look at things and how people are struggling in some areas.

It’s getting better as more local people who are priced out of other parts of Cornwall look for places to settle.

I’d go for it.

Totally commutable to Truro for better work prospects.

I really like mid Cornwall (I’m a south east Cornwall girl) and think it gets more interesting all the time as the clay villages evolve and artists look for places to live that they can afford.

This.

I didn't want to say it but it's all a bit of a grim place these days. A Poundland paradise.

I have friends who live on the outskirts of St A and love it.
I live up in the north of Cornwall and it's miles from anywhere...I'm not sure I'd choose this area again.

I'm originally from nearby and did my A Levels there. Grey, is all I will say. Grey and depressing. I can't see it's changed. The train line is good though.

It's a shame as it has the makings of a nice town. A lovely old market hall. It was once very well-to-do.

dizzygirl1 · 30/08/2021 20:10

I used to live there, parents and school friends still do. Would I go back? Nope not in a million years. Great in the sun and without tourists but otherwise it's just grey and the 'town' really has got worse and worse.

SaltySeaAir · 31/08/2021 11:47

I wouldn't. In-laws live there, lovely areas around it, but the place itself is awful.

dubyalass · 31/08/2021 12:21

Given it's Cornwall's biggest town, it should be a lot better than it is. The town centre is fairly grim, which is a shame, because it's got some lovely buildings. I think it suffers from there being a number of 'halfway houses' fairly near the centre and so there is quite a bit of open drug and alcohol abuse, and begging. I wouldn't walk through alone at night. That said, housing is much better value for money than many areas, and the amenities are generally good, plus it's on the main line as others have said. I just find it dull and a little bit dodgy. You could look at Par and St Blazey instead, or up the hill to Carclaze for amazing views but still walkable into town.

Thank you everyone,

luckily enough im in a position i can take my medical insurance with me from my firm in london, so I havent got to rely on work.

we lived in Newquay about 40 years ago so when newquay was very different to what it is today and probably cornwall is today

just being by the coast is so expensive given the choice i would be by the coast, my budget is somewhere between £200-£300 k and thats mortgage & debt free.

i feel priveldged to be able to even consider this going back,

could anyone recommend other locations,

I dont drive due to medical issues hence why im on medical insurance via my old firm in london.

would appreciate any help you can give.

kindest regards chris

I'm not sure mid Cornwall is a great place to move to if you don't drive. Public transport is very limited / non existent.

I don't understand what you having medical insurance has to do with your decision to move to Cornwall? Choice of care provider will be very limited, there is only one acute hospital which is Treliske in Truro.

How will you get around e.g. for medical appointments etc?

dubyalass · 31/08/2021 19:27

Yes, not driving will severely limit your options. If you really want to be in Cornwall I would look at somewhere like Saltash where you're close to Derriford for hospital appointments but also near the sea, public transport, amenities plus big shops in Plymouth etc.
