Outdoor Toilet Conversion

I'm buying a flat with an outdoor toilet. It's surrounded on both sides by neighbours so there is no chance of incorporating it into an existing room.

I'm not sure of exact dimensions, but it is the size of a large cubicle in a public toilet - I'd estimate a metre across by 1.5 metres.

It's currently used as a junk space by the owners and we don't need it for storage as there is an old coal cupboard which is big enough for what we need. I'd rather do something fun with it if possible.

The obvious thing is to use it as a 'party' toilet or something - as far as I am aware the plumbing still works - but this seems like a lot of money for not much gain.

Has anyone used their outdoor toilet for something fun and can help me with some suggestions?

Bump for the lunchtime interior designers.

What's a party toilet, and why would it need such heavy investment if it's there already?
The space doesn't really suggest anything "fun".

Has it been concreted or is the drainage still there?

NewHouseNewMe · 26/08/2021 13:35

Maybe an outdoor rain shower or bath? I read about them in the Sunday Times..

Mine has been turned into a logstore for my open fire.

Just a toilet for when we've got people over in the garden. The flat is up some steep-ish stairs from the garden so it might be nice when people are pissed to have somewhere close by.

The toilet would need work because it hasn't been touched since the date at which a toilet was added inside. It's an old fashioned gravity flush toilet and there's at least one bit of pipe that has cracked at some point. As far as I know it works, but no one has used it for decades.

I know the space doesn't lend itself to being fun, it just feels like a waste of a few square metres to not be used.

Could you turn it into a greenhouse with a clear roof? Or a catio with a tunnel into the house?

Good ideas, but no. The toilet is in the building of the house - it cuts into the floorplan of the flat below and the ceiling is my kitchen. No cat and no plans to get one.

Remove the toilet,
Seal the outlet pipe,
Fix a single mattress to the wall,
Attach a couple of robust straps to the wall each side of the mattress.
You then another 'bedroom' (although you do have to sleep standing up - hence the straps).Great if someone needs to stay over after one of your parties.

OR leave it as a toilet and use it for those serious/noisy jobs that you would rather not have in your flat.

Well then a fireman's pole or slide?

I know someone who has done just that. Spruced up the old outdoor toilet so that her dc's can wash hands and wee while playing out and bbq guests don't have to traipse though the house. I think it's a really good idea.

Party toilet idea sounds ideal tbh. Solar powered fairy lights for added Fun??

During Covid our previously neglected outside loo has been a lifesaver, my husband has been going through cancer treatment so we haven’t been able to have anyone in the house. We repainted and sorted the lighting and corner sink, fluffed it up a bit.
Our garden has now become our social hub. Previously we had been think of opening it up to connect to the kitchen and make a small utility room, we are so glad that we didn’t.

Or cut through and install a spiral staircase to access the garden from your kitchen …

I want a party toilet!! 😏. How many toilets are there inside the flat? How many people live in the flat? If less than 2 I would definitely keep the outside one 😉 It sounds lovely actually. Just do it up a bit. Maybe a bit of a theme?? My sister has created a fabulous London Underground themed one. Loved ace!!

The only thing about outdoor toilets is the spiders 😬

Have a look on Pinterest. We have recently replaced the Victorian leaking loo. The plumber picked up a cheap one from the sale corner. I am going to fill the cracks in the plaster and paint it. I was thinking I might paint the back of the door in a garden scene so it is a surprise when you shut it. We can’t fit a basin but discovered we could have bought a toilet with a basin on top. People just wash hands in our sink in the kitchen.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 31/08/2021 08:00

Our outside loo all through covid was brilliant. It’s gone now due to extension and we miss it. Spruce it up and leave as a loo.
