Any tips for a diy house move

We are moving our family of five 100 miles from a 3 bed to a 4 bed in about 3wks when our new build is ready. We were going to hire a removal company but realised after packing that we are not taking much with us eg. no sofas, bedroom furniture or kitchen appliances. My husband doesn't feel comfortable driving a really big van so we were thinking of hiring a smaller one over several days and doing multiple trips, or is that a silly idea? Anyone else do that? Or have tips on what to hire or who from? Or just general tips on moving day if you moved yourself? Any advice greatly appreciated

If you have no bug furniture one Luton should be fine.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like it was indeed a silly idea of DH to do it over 2-3 days. Pickfords wanted a stupid amount for a house removal so DH was convinced we could just do it ourselves, especially when he saw how little was going. We've been fully packed and boxed up for a few weeks now. DH drives a fully electric car and had been looking at electric van hire. I shall go back to square one and start ringing round removal companies & look at that anyvan website and hope they are ok that we won't have an exact date yet

@SpiesRUs

Yeah my advice would be don't do it yourselves.

We've moved several times in the last few years and used a website called Anyvan to get a quote. They find local 'man with van' services.

You put in your inventory and it gives your prices to include / exclude packing / dismantling furniture etc A full pack and move with Pickfords was around £2.5k, a 30 mile move only was £400 with Anyvan to give you an idea of prices.

You are awesome. Just been to their website and seen we can definitely afford them.

Having seen how professional movers pack boxes and load a van I wouldn't even attempt to do it myself! My friend moved recently and hadn't packed a thing in advance other than an overnight bag and they went through the place like a whirlwind. The people she bought off were still trying to cram things into cars and a hire van when she arrived at the property with the keys so technically they should already have been out.

Get cardboard boxes, fill with stuff and label them. Make sure to have contact details and photos of the house too. Know your rights in case as well. Use a removal firm OP- much easier. Before signing any paperwork, read over it carefully and request clarification if you are confused about any part of it. Breathe and smile.

If you've a lot already packed and you DH is already driving here for work, I'd consider renting a storage unit, and each morning your DH takes a few boxes in the car and pops them in the storage before work.

Pickfords are expensive. Other removal firms cheaper but worth the money.

You need far more boxes than you think. Amateur movers overload them them they break or are too heavy to shift.

The van you need will be bigger than you think.

Remember enough time to clean the old place.

With that distance you need to transport In one go. The van must be big enough.

Removal men are used to shifting awkward stuff fast and without damage. Teens will struggle and you’re likely to end up damaging new house or stuff. Insurance companies are insured.

You’ve spent thousands on buying, so pay the last few hundred to do it properly.

Have you ever done that before?
We had to move ourselves twice. Ever since I have counted paying for good removals as worth every single penny.

My late mother used to drive big vans & mini buses as a volunteer for various charities. She always drove the removal van whenever anyone in the family or friends moved and my brother and I did the lifting. It's going to be so strange moving without her or my brother. Mum drove the van here 18 years ago. We are most likely going to go with Anyvan for the house removal service as it looks good and we can list individual items to get a tailored quote. Mum would think we are crackers but we now think it's the better option.
