How long between getting an offer accepted to completion?

I expect it's a case of how long is a piece of string, but I'd be interested in hearing people's recent experiences. DH and I are planning to take the plunge and start looking to move soon. Last time we were first time buyers with no chain so it took less than three months from our offer being accepted to moving in. Somehow I don't think we'll be as lucky this time!

We sold a house earlier this year (no chain, empty house) and that was about 13 or 14 weeks I think.

We are 17 weeks into our purchase, hoping to complete early next month so looking at a total of 19 weeks. There was a chain involved though, and delays while our vendors found somewhere, which then fell through etc. The conveyancing for our part of the chain probably could have been done in 8 weeks I reckon.

Took us 8 months 😱
My blood pressure was through the roof at times

Sold my house last year and it took 9 months after accepting the offer.

makingmyway10 · 22/08/2021 15:34

We sold and bought in Spring last year. Our offer was excepted late December and we moved in March. From our first viewing until move day it was 4 months.

Chemenger · 22/08/2021 15:38

Offered on Monday, moving date is agreed as 29th September. Property is empty, cash purchase, Scotland so survey has already been done.

We sold a house recently. Accepted an offer on May 21st, completed August 3rd.

Chemenger · 22/08/2021 15:45

We do still have to get our own house sold, it needs some work and a major declutter. We’re downsizing so we plan one more Christmas in the family house before we move out. It will be a very leisurely move. Total luxury compared to every other move I’ve done. We thought we would be looking for somewhere new for ages but found the ideal place on our first viewing. Too good to miss.

I would say from my experience and friends experience when there's a chain, between 4 and 6 months.

DreamingOfTheSouthOfFrance · 22/08/2021 15:52

Offer accepted on April 22nd and completing tomorrow. Grin My buyer is in rented property and the house I'm buying is empty! One solicitor (not mine) held everyone up unfortunately.

Missusblusky1 · 22/08/2021 16:09

I realise I was very very lucky but I was in the middle of a chain of 4 last year, and it took 8 weeks from offer to moving in - first and last buyer/ seller had no chain and I think 3 out of 4 of us having the same solicitor helped massively though!

RogersVideo · 22/08/2021 16:19

Had an offer on our house 4.5 months ago, we offered on another 4 months ago, still haven't exchanged. Hopefully will in the next week or two. 3 properties in our chain.

sst1234 · 22/08/2021 17:52

I have experienced 8 weeks and 6 months for near identical purchases. The difference - which bank the mortgage if with and if the valuation/survey throws up any issues.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/08/2021 17:57

My landlady agreed to sell to
Me on the 26th April. Completed on 1st august.

IndiaMay · 22/08/2021 17:59

We had 4 months from offer accepted to completion when we moved dec last year

CharlieBrown65 · 22/08/2021 18:08

Offer accepted 15th may, completed on 30th July. Just over 10 weeks and we were in the middle of a three person chain. We hassled our solicitors constantly though.

ballsdeep · 22/08/2021 18:14

It took us just over 6.5 months.

Gyptian · 22/08/2021 18:51

House up for sale 14 months ago. Offer accepted on onwards purchase 13 months ago. Still waiting for a date….🙈😱 We are an extreme case through.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 22/08/2021 18:56

17 weeks. Both ends chain free, but it was delayed for some work to be completed.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 22/08/2021 19:01

Too bloody long.

We accepted an offer on our sale 8 weeks ago and wanted to be completed in two weeks so 10 weeks but isn't gonna happen. Our vendor has only just found an onward purchase last week, which thankfully is vacant and searches have been done. But fuck knows when we will complete our solicitor won't even discuss it with me.

Going to have to leave dp here and me and ds move in with my parents for ds new school 2nd week of sept. I'm not happy!

transformandriseup · 22/08/2021 19:07

We had an offer accepted on our flat almost 10 months ago with no sign of a completion/exchange date.

Ruddyknackered · 22/08/2021 19:10

2 months, spring of this year. Chain of 3 with a Cash buyer at the top and we'd already moved out, at the bottom.

Starseeking · 22/08/2021 19:36

For my sale, I accepted the offer in April and completed in June, it was exactly 10 weeks.

For my purchase, vendor accepted offer in July, and it's been almost 6 weeks with very slow progress. Hopefully things will move much quicker now, as there's only 3 parties and 2 properties in the chain; I've already sold, my vendor is doing a simultaneous sale and purchase, and they are buying a property out of probate (just been granted, which caused delay). I'm hoping it'll be finished in a further 6 weeks at most, though realistically will be pleased if I can get in by the end of October.

PolypGrunterPulpit · 22/08/2021 19:37

Wow quite a few quick and super long ones here. Four months seems to be fairly average. Guess it depends on so many variables!

We had an offer accepted the second half of May and now have a completion date of 13 September. It’s a chain free sale, but the stamp duty holiday, which we aren’t eligible for as we’re FTB’s, held thing up in June for a month, and now the seller can’t move until mid-September despite us being in a position to move in August. It’s frustrating but as long as it’s not delayed any longer I can live with it. So nearly 16 weeks in total.
