Which tiles would go with this kitchen? Need inspiration!

We are getting a new kitchen later this year and now thinking of tiles for the walls. We've looked online at a few tile stores but selections are overwhelming and we aren't sure what to go for. I've attached a render of what the new kitchen will look like (minus the tiles!) if any lovely people who have a good eye for these things can take a look and see what they think. We gave mostly red accessories in our current kitchen which we plan to keep. Thanks so much if you can help!

Cream units, wood-effect floor and worktop, and black handles, red accessories? Is that right?

The red is quite an “in-your-face” punchy colour. So I’d suggest a really neutral tile, as otherwise it’ll compete with the red.

Alternatively have a tile the same colour as the wall - maybe a sage green, with scarlet florally blinds a la Susie Watson (I like the country look but appreciate it’s dated).

Saz12 thank you for the sage suggestion, I would never have thought of a green shade but after using a visualiser tool I can see it would work really well. Genius idea!

Oh it really depends on a) how much colour you like and b) what the red is you already have.

You could go down the orange route, that can look great with red.

Or agree green is often very nice with red.

Or neutral, but this appeals to me least.

Towerofjoyless · 22/08/2021 09:16

Agree Iannistunut about neutral, one of my worries is the kitchen looking too bland, even with the red

I like the idea of orange! Or maybe yellow? Depends how confident you are with colour!

If not, white with red accessories is quite a classic diner type look. Or even black and white checkered effect (with square or metro tiles). May not work with the wood worktop though

I've been having a play about with a visualiser tool, tried a few shades of green and an orange. Have attached them, what do you think? Ignore the squinty layout!

I'm not keen on your work top tbh. I think it looks a bit pale along with your cream units. Appreciate photo might not be good.

Towerofjoyless · 22/08/2021 10:51

No effybriest? I felt it goes well but will admit tile colours might have been a bit easier were the worktop darker

We've gone with a glass splashback thinking when we get bored of it its very easy to change and completely change the look of the kitchen in doing so?

Just thought I'd throw that into your idea pot! - if you scroll down there is literally every colour or idea range you can think of

QueenStromba · 22/08/2021 12:38

That's not a real wood worktop is it? They're a bloody nightmare to keep nice.

Anyway, I like the smaller green metro tiles.

yes these can be good, get lovely not-too-bright tiles, then get a splashback and some accessories, then they can be changed without much waste.

Personally I have dark worktops - and wish I had got lighter!

Re the neutral thing: 13 years ago we built a house that we weren’t sure if we’d ever live in it or just rent it out, so went for neutralish not-on-trend floors/tiles/paint colours. We ended up renting it out for 2 years and have lived here for 11. I’m so glad we did. We have lots of colour through accessories/art/furniture but I love the neutral base so much that I would do the same things again in the house I am planning to move to in 10 years.

In answer to your specific question, haven’t regretted the black/white/grey mosaic tiles.

JRsandCoffee · 22/08/2021 14:22

We’ve just done something similar in terms of units/ worktops/ floors (last two are slightly lighter) and after borrowing every tile colour you can possibly imagine, green, aqua, pink, orange, yellow, you name it, we went with white. We have a lot of colourful crap though, not afraid of the colour 😂. It is however an awkward room for light.

What I would say though is to go in and borrow a couple of the tiles you are thinking of from the shop and put them where they are going, and keep doing it until you come up with the answer. I thought I knew that I wanted a strong colour statement but every time it just didn’t look right and tiles I loved in the shop looked drab or OTT in place. Then I thought a pale aqua green and it looked like muddy ditchwater, and so on, our light is a bit awkward as mentioned. White is neutral and looks great on the splashback, we didn’t tile anywhere else as worktop has an upstand, I may live to regret this round the sink but not yet! Happy hunting this was my hardest choice across four rooms, three of which involved tile choices so if it feels like it should be easy but somehow isn’t you are not alone!

Towerofjoyless · 22/08/2021 16:19

Furball I had thought about a splashback but DH wasn't keen on them. We have the same issue as you JRsandCoffee wrt light, the kitchen is North facing and not very big so keeping in mind that we can't have it too dark.

Sorry QueenStromba I meant to reply to you - no it's luxury laminate, not wood! Didn't fancy wood, it seemed like too much hard work

It really is!

Hadjab · 23/08/2021 16:43

Honestly, I'd leave the tiles and change the worktop. It's far too similar to the floor and makes everything feel heavy.

Towerofjoyless · 23/08/2021 17:18

Hadjab our current worktop is quite dark so I like the one we have picked as it's very different to what we have. If anything I would change the floor rather than the worktop but not keen to go darker with that as I'm worried the room will look too dark overall due to the dodgy natural light situation. But then I wouldn't be keen to go too light either as it might look too out of place!
