Does £2500 sound reasonable for this decorating job?

I have just finally managed to find a painter and decorator to do some decorating. I have accepted his quote but it seems a very large sum for the work based on last painting job I had done in my previous home/area that was similar work and under £1000

I’m in northwest- middle of road in terms of property price. And the job is for the landing, stairs and a sitting/diner/kitchen open plan room. Walls in white emulsion ( already white but dirty ) and white gloss woodwork including banisters and 7 doors in total.

Does this sound about right - am I being over charged? Compared to prices right now.

If I am being overcharged I have to do it myself and I’m fed up of painting- 4 rooms done by myself and I’ll have another 2 rooms to do even after getting someone to tackle these! I’m so fed up with painting😥 so I’m hoping it is ok, but it is just so much more than I expected and can really afford.

I live in London and recently got quoted £2,300 for hallway, landing, stairs and living room. This inc stripping wallpaper, painting 5 new doors, banister, handrail and shelves/cupboard unit. The hallway/landing/stairs are quite big areas. Another quote I received was twice this!!

Hi @Easttt - were you happy with the work? I am currently looking for a painter / decorator to paint two bedrooms. There is wallpaper on the ceiling of one of the two that needs to be taken of and wallpaper on one wall. The remaining I had taken off myself.

Ive been quoted £700. I’ll have to pay for the paint on top of that.

Would you mind sharing the painter’s details with me? I also live in London (SE)

Maybe I live somewhere entirely different to you but I've just had my hall and stairs stripped, papered and painted, my en-suite painted, (very) large bedroom papered and painted and downstairs toilet half tongue and grooved, papered and painted for just under £1100. They did an excellent job.

@HappyNL I wasn't completely happy so I wouldn't recommend.

Does the company where you had the quote from have a good online presence and do they have reviews you can read?

HappyNL · 18/02/2022 20:09

They have good (and seem genuine) reviews on google. I just checked online and according to checkatrade.com the price seems reasonable…

But just read @Mo1911 reply and it seems overpriced..

That’s a shame.. They have good (and seem genuine) reviews on google. I just checked online and according to checkatrade.com the price seems reasonable…

Hi @Mo1911, mine is definitely overpriced. Would you mind sharing the details of your painter? Which part of London are you? I am in SE

HappyNL · 18/02/2022 20:20

@Easttt, I am sorry to hear that you were not happy with the work. It’s so difficult isn’t it? To find someone that’s good for a reasonable price. Feels like a gamble. A high quote doesn’t guarantee good work either.

Easttt · 20/02/2022 18:00

@HappyNL It wasn't terrible they were just lazy really and overpriced for the quality of the finishing in areas.

It is difficult unless you know someone who can recommend someone really good. The prices vary so much too. Really hope you find someone decent.
