What would you do with this fireplace?

Giving this room a lick of paint as an interim measure. We can't afford to replace the fireplace right now.

It's not really to our taste, but I'm not sure it's worth trying to tart it up by painting the wood bit, might look a bit naff?

What would do you...

  1. Paint the wood bit
  2. Paint over the tiles
  3. Leave it as is, take it out in a couple of years and hopefully sell the surround to someone that will appreciate it

Please leave it. Its beautiful x

If you do change anything then maybe some nicer tiles but the wooden surround is so lovely I've never seen anything like it before and I'm an interiors addict especially vintage x

@Ikeameatballs yes painted floorboards, not a good colour choice. Haven't decided what we're doing about flooring yet, either a carpet or more neutral / standard wooden flooring.

Someone else asked if it's in keeping with the house, yes it's a 30s house. The room is north facing and doesn't get a lot of light so any colours we go for on the walls will need to be bright and light.

I'm going to give it a good clean and wait until we've painted the walls, then we can decided. But I'm pretty set on keeping it as is for now and try make it a feature. I'll upload another picture once painting is complete!

Hmm, north facing means the blue tones I’ve suggested might be very cold/dark.

If you can’t link the wall colour to the tiles then I’d be tempted to paint the tiles either warm white or black.

AlwaysLatte · 20/08/2021 07:38

It would be vandalism to paint it! I'd keep it, it's beautiful.

JuneOsborne · 20/08/2021 07:41

Cor, it's bloody lovely.

I know what you mean about the tiles, they're not especially pretty and the colours are a bit wishy washy. But, it's glorious none the less. I'd just make sure that you paint in colours that compliment it. I'd be tempted to pick out that blue in something else in the room to try and tie it in.

I have a 1930s house and there aren't many features left. But I'm trying to do up the front room in the style it would have been in originally and I'd kill for that fireplace in there! (Rather than the dingy hole we've been left with after the last owners ripped it out).

But, it's each to their own.

Gingernaut · 20/08/2021 07:48

Don't touch it.

That red floor does nothing for it.

Would it be possible to paint the floor a shade of grey to match the accents on the fireplace?

Possibly paint the walls with a neutral colour from 1930s.

I think the colours of the tiles clash with the floor badly, with a neutral coloured wall and floor it will look lovely. The wood is really very nice. You could pick out that blue in the tiles in the room to tie it in. Maybe get a lovely 30's style mirror above it, fan style.
Work with it and you'll have something special

SaltySeaAir · 20/08/2021 09:05

Well I'm going against everyone else here, if you don't like it, get rid of it! It's your house 🙂 Personally I don't like it at all, although if the whole house is art deco in style I wouldn't have purchased in the first place.

If it was me would try and sell to someone who does love it, and then put something in I love.

I do love the second fireplace you showed ♥️

dramalamma · 20/08/2021 10:14

It's not so much the tiles or the surround but the fact that they don't match. Personally I'd paint the surround the same pale blue as in the tiles but recognise that's probably a controversial opinion. I think that way it would look more modern. Agree about the wallpaper needing changing too

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/08/2021 08:40
  1. Leave it as it is.

Do not paint the surround or the tiles. When you remove it, the surround should come away fairly easily - may be screwed in each side (under the plaster) once you have removed that the whole tiled fireplace should come out in one piece - it will be very heavy.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/08/2021 09:06

The tiles are lovely, we had a tiled fireplace with similar tiles in our last house and once the walls were painted white it looked great. Not so keen on the dark shiny varnish on the wood but that could be stripped and a lighter wax or oil used to modernise it without painting (although lots of peoole are kainting these fireplaces at the moment which is better than pulling it out). Suspect the other fireplace is actually a modern addition, depends how old your house actually is.

SciFiScream · 23/08/2021 09:12

Oh my gosh it's a stunning Art Deco fireplace. Don't do anything to it! Protect it. It's absolutely beautiful. Truly.
