Renovation stress!

Just wondering if anyone is like me…!

We’re in the process of renovating a house, and I am literally picking holes and stressing about everything. And I mean everything!! We’ve had tradespeople in to do the work, and yet somehow I think I know best and find myself googling and questioning everything that’s been done after the fact. It’s super unhealthy and I’m an absolute nightmare to be around at the moment :( I really feel like I’m sucking out all the joy in the process, but I’m panicking that we’re getting stuff wrong.

Couple of examples!!
In the bathroom, I’ve second guessed why the fitter plastered before tiling, whether or not the shower cubicle can take the weight of the tiles, why the fitter didn’t tank a shower area, why the fitter used flexis to join the taps to the copper pipes instead of static copper, whether the flexis will result in a catastrophic flood in a couple years….

This can’t be normal! Surely people just look at a lovely new bathroom and think - that’s a lovely new bathroom! I really wish I didn’t do it, I’m always catastrophising.

Any words of wisdom from people that have been through a renovation process and lived to tell the tale?

We're renovating a large Edwardian house, and are doing 95% of the work ourselves.

Mainly because we can't afford to get tradesmen in, but also because OH is far happier knowing that he has done a job properly from scratch.

It's painfully slow, but I know the quality of work is good.

Thanks @LittleOverWhelmed :) do you mind me asking what they got wrong and how you found out about it? I do ask them questions, but then find it hard to challenge them if they say what they’re doing is right (even if google says opposite) and then I get a bit stuck not knowing what to do next. Such a pallava!

@bettyfloormop that sounds like a good way to go about it!

We’re at the beginning of our renovation and I’m doing the same. Am driving DH mad he keeps telling me I’m ‘sucking the fun out of it’. I actually ended up referring myself for CBT as I think my catastrophising and anxiety around the renovation was getting unhealthy. On the plus side because of my neurosis I’m hopefully going to be able to spot any problems early on. I think it is tricky to strike a balance between making sure you are on top of everything and being neurotic (I have not found that balance!!) good luck OP. No advice, just empathy!

We got a builder with an excellent reference to do ours. He was spotting things others hadn't, did a work around for the botched architect drawing, the bungled kitchen plan and the roof issue. I felt 98% confident in his work. Asked him about why on a couple of things and he explained clearly and patiently.

Gosh @LittleOverWhelmed that sounds pretty full on!! Well done for everything you’ve done so far, sounds like you’re all over it!

Thanks all for your replies xxx
