I'm probably getting ahead of myself but I am interviewing for a job in York soon and need to start thinking about salary negotiations etc, because if I got the job I might prefer to move to the city rather than commuting. I currently live around an hour away.

So for those of you who live in York-what are your thoughts? Do you love it? Hate it?

Also, I would be renting in the first instance-are there any areas I should avoid? I would be looking to rent a one or two bed property and I reckon I will have a maximum budget of £800 a month. Where would you suggest for that budget?

What are the nicest areas of the city?

Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated!

Badger hill , osbaldwick and hull road area are all walking distance of heslington so you would be best living around there to avoid traffic .

@sunshinesbrightly a while since I was a student there, but Tang Hall was particularly notorious. All down Hull Road are pockets of student houses too. Quote a few in Badgerhill and some in Heslington Village (though those latter two are quieter). Quite a lot of student houses in the terraced streets just outside the city walls too. Student houses are in pockets across the city but if I was buying in York I'd definitely check out who my neighbours would be. That's not to say that wouldn't change in the future but at least you'd know if you were likely to have student parties next door from the moment you moved in!! I'm sure it's similar in most university cities though. York is brilliant.

Wonderful place to live Wink

Most expensive - Bishy Road, Fulford, Heworth. Lovely but pricy. Also Holgate.

Middle of the road - Rawcliffe, some bits of Clifton, Osbaldwick

Rougher - some bits of Clifton, Tang Hall, some bits of Acomb.

Having said that we've lived in one of the more 'rough' areas and it wasn't so bad.

There's lot of rental properties around the hospital which is a decent enough area and walkable into town but obviously busy with hospital workers etc.

Good luck!

York is a great city and I honestly think that by a lot of standards the deprivation isn't as obvious. Great, but pricey areas to live are Fulford Road/Fulford Village/Heslington and The Mount/Tadcaster Road areas.
There's lots to do in the city and always some festival or event taking place.
Good luck with the interview 🤞🏼

Hello all, just thought I'd update this thread. I got the job so the move to York is on! Thanks to all of you for your recommendations. I've set up some property alerts and am focusing on the areas you all highlighted.

The plan is still to commute for the first few months as I want to make sure I'm happy in the job (and to see if there are going to be more lockdowns over winter) but if all goes well I should be moving in early 2022!
