Huge house, lovely grounds, red squirrels! But the extension glass bit... you'd have to rip it down and start again, wouldn't you?

It's just very of its time

Is that necessarily wrong though? I think the basic structure has merit as a piece of 70s architecture. The stone cladding inside might be a step too far though (although I remember carrying in the carefully numbered stones to build a stone fireplace in the 70s with my dad 😂)

@TheGenealogist

I didn't post it as a "look how awful this house is". It's a perfectly decent house in a lovely area, with a massive garden. It's just very of its time, taken to extremes. It's clearly not been touched since it was built.
Oh didn’t you? What’s this then in your OP? You think half of it needs ripping down.

@SleepingStandingUp

It’s a bit ‘retirement home lounge’ isn’t it?! Rip out the carpet abd furniture though abd you'd totally change the vibe. I'm thinking play room or dining room
True! I love big windows!
AchillesLastStand · 17/08/2021 09:23

With some changes it could be a fantastic house. I would keep the extension though. The location is stunning and would be the main draw for me. It’s a much nicer house than one another poster has started a thread about with a bright neon green kitchen. I might be biased though though as I’m in the process of purchasing a house that was built in 1971 not with this price tag though!

TheGenealogist · 17/08/2021 09:25

Perhaps keeping the shell of the extension would work. Rip out everything inside, change the windows for larger panels, make a big double height room maybe.

@BalloonSlayer

It's like Tracy Island! Love it!

GreenMeeple · 17/08/2021 09:38

Actually I think they blocked the top parts of the window s in the living room. From the outside it looks like there are floor to ceiling windows but inside they have wall above the windows. Very strange.

Saggybaggyaggy · 17/08/2021 09:39

Rip out everything inside the extension? And destroy everything it is? Yes replace the carpet perhaps but no. I hate to see unusual and architecturally original buildings turned into soulless places. I hope someone who appreciates it has the money to buy and enjoy it.

LynetteScavo · 17/08/2021 09:39

I love the stairs in the extension! I would so be keeping those, but the carpet would go.

GreenMeeple · 17/08/2021 09:51

Also bedroom 4 has no bathroom, only the downstairs toilet. Very inconvenient. This house definitely has had some odd design decisions over the years. But the extension is not one of them in my opinion, it's the best bit.

Purpletomato · 17/08/2021 10:08

I love it.

Time40 · 17/08/2021 10:14

I like it, and the extension is the best bit. My god though, that's incredibly expensive for Scotland.

TheLadyGrayson · 17/08/2021 10:15

Imagine listening to the thwack of golf balls from the driving range all day.. that would drive me mad 😂 love the red squirrels though.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 17/08/2021 10:18

It's glorious, I love it. Change the kitchen and the carpets and it'd be a lovely place to live (as it should be at that price!)

showmethegin · 17/08/2021 10:36

That's dream house territory!!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 17/08/2021 10:36

Ripping out that extension would be criminal. It is awesome and an excellent example of architecture of that period. Granted not the period that the original house was built but you see ultra modern extensions added to old properties in grand designs etc all the time. That was ultra modern at the time. Plus its awesome.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 17/08/2021 13:35

I love it just as it is. Brilliant example of extension of its time.

Granted you wouldn't keep the flat roof bifold door extension we've just put on our house in 40 years time - which is also very of its time. This extension is very different.

CassandraCross · 17/08/2021 13:49

I like it (and didn't think I would!) it's interesting and quirky, great views from that extension which I think is brilliant. I see what a previous poster means about the big windows in it and wonder if that may be because of the roof shape and putting curtains up? A few tweaks here and there and it would be truly fabulous.

CheerfulBunny · 17/08/2021 14:13

Blimey! It's a bit Crossroads Motel. Lovely grounds though.

AlfonsoTheMango · 17/08/2021 14:30

Not to my taste but I'm sure there is a buyer out there who will love it.

PhoenixFreesias · 17/08/2021 14:35

I think there’s a lot you could do with this, given some time and a bit of money

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 17/08/2021 14:41

I love it too. True to its period, could use a couple of changes inside but overall a great find.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 17/08/2021 14:50

i really like it. Well proportioned rooms, lovely big windows and gorgeous light. I rather like some of dark wood bedroom units as well.

prettybird · 17/08/2021 15:50

Location right beside Gleneagles Hotel grounds (overlooking the practice ground, a driver Wink away from the Monarch's or whatever it's called now ) will be the reason for the price.

A friend of mine's father died and his house in Auchterarder (a wee bit further from the hotel, closer to the village centre but still walking distance to both), although it was smaller and had smaller grounds (but beautiful gardens as his parents - and he, as he went up every weekend - had been keen gardeners) went for a fortune - even though the purchasers just demolished the house and its garage/outbuildings and built new Shock

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 17/08/2021 19:32

It's a lovely house on a great plot. I love the large, light and bright extension - imagine how great a party you could have there!

I would update the wall and floor decor but the rest of the house is stunning.
