Stair carpet for an Edwardian house

Does it have to be a runner?

I’m looking for inspiration for new carpet for my stairs and landing and literally every picture is a runner rather than ‘wall to wall’. Current carpet put in by previous owner is full width and I have no idea what condition the wood is underneath, nor do I particularly have the inclination to paint the stairs. It would have to be full width for the landing anyway.
I’d love anyone’s thoughts on this and any inspiration of carpet to go with stiffkey blue walls would also be appreciated.

We and many friends in Victorian/Edwardian houses have a runner for the first flight and then full width from the first landing upwards. Is that an option?

Of course you can still go full width. I would go for something mid tone neutral loop (unless you have cats) ideally with a bit of a fleck to it.

Thanks @minipie I definitely would go full width on the second set of stairs. I know a runner will look nice but just not sure I can cope with the painting and the potential dust gathering.

Runner would be more traditional with rods!! Plus they should add extra in top and bottom so that you can move it up or down - so when the bits on the treads wear you move the carpet so what was a riser is then a tread prolonging the life of the carpet. Very economic friendly!!

How does that work starfish, where does the excess go??
