Sofa recommendations

Hi everyone,

We bought a Sofa.com Izzy chaise after lots of research and recommendations online. We’ve both been so disappointed in it though. We’ve barely had it a year and the chaise has sagged and dipped, the cushions are all sagging and it looks a good 10 years old even with daily plumps. We’ve ended up buying more filling and filled it ourselves as we hated the sagged tired look of it.

We’re in the process of buying a sofa for the front room. We don’t mind it being on the firmer side as long as it holds it shape more and it’s better quality.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

We we’re considering a Rose and Grey sofa. Does anyone have any experience with them? Thanks Smile

Our DFS sofa looks great after 7 years!

I’m also shopping for a new sofa for my new house I’m moving into new next month. After trailing around various shops like M&S and John Lewis we couldn’t find a sofa as comfy as our current DFS one. A lot of them have backs that are too low and hard arms. Our current sofa looks a bit dated and worn out now and also it’s brown which I hate. I want some colour.

We’re off to good old DFS to check out their sofas next weekend. I would like a dark blue velvet one. Would anyone recommend velvet as a sofa fabric?

I’m also interested to hear some recommendations.

We’ve got three from here

www.arloandjacob.com/

Two years in and they’ve been very good so far.

I've got the DFS French Connection sofas. They're around 4 years old now and still look new, despite having 2 feral boys jumping on them everyday. I don't have velvet but I'm sure that's an option.

I have the John Lewis Gplan velvet sofa and it's fantastic - my cat doesn't touch it and the seat cushions are a firm foam. The arms are slim/hard though (it comes with bolster cushions which I prefer anyway).

I do not recommend lazyboy recliners.
We have only had ours for two years and it looks like shite

I'm in the trade OP. Ask Rose and Grey if they use coil sprung units or serpentine (zig zag) springs.

A spring unit costs us around £100 trade and will last 20 to 30 years.

A zig zag spring costs around 3p and has no place in any furniture seat..........

Did you end up going with rose and grey? If so how has it held up? We have an arlo and Jacob one that's rubbish 3 years on.

Try Ercol. We have their Forli in grey with a dark wood frame and it’s very comfy and well made. They're a high street brand but seem good value to me and we’ve had a few brands.

Sofa.com corner sofa was exactly as you describe, not good. Boconcept quite a hard sit and the corduroy fabric has not been durable. Ercol use a soft polyester which is great in comparison.

What about webbed bases? Are they any good?

My 16yo SCS sofa is still holding up well! It's got a tiny bit of mid-point sag, but hardly any really considering it's age.

We've just moved to a new, larger house, so have just ordered another SCS sofa to go alongside our current one. Bigger, with a chaise. Can't wait.

I've very recently been sofa shopping myself.

DFS all had super-low backs and generally felt very low to the ground. Alright if you're a spritely 20-something, but not so good when you're becoming an increasingly creaky 40-something!

I ended up with one from SCS. The backs came up a fair bit higher, and they just felt more substantial and solid that the DFS ones did. They are a bit more expensive though.

Even Sofaology felt better in the flesh than DFS did, and were much the same in price.

As someone with inside knowledge, what sofa retailers would you recommend?

sellotape12 · 26/03/2025 21:19

Also sofa shopping after our giant, deep Loaf sofa just isn't for us (too soft, too deep, not enough head support). I liked Sofa.com Bluebell in the store but I bloody knew Mumsnet would tell me it's not worked out well for them 😆 If anyone has found something that lasts well, doesn't sag and isn't dated, let us all know. And yes @BrilloPaddy would also love to know if there's any retailers recommend.

Papricat · 27/03/2025 19:32

Buy second hand Danish sofa and get it reupholstered. Will last for generations.

MrsJoanDanvers · 27/03/2025 22:15

We bought a Sofa.com corner soda almost 4 years ago. It still looks very good-the seat cushions are feather wrapped foam and still firm, the back cushions do sag and need plumping but that’s what you get with feather cushions. The upholstery still looks very good. It is the Aissa model. I hoover and swap around cushions every week though to maintain its I also have a Sofa Workshop sofa, 10 years old and is very good-doesn’t need plumping as not feather. I think DFS took over some of their models. Steer clear of feather if you don’t want to plump.
