Replacing 1970s brown hanging tiles

Our house has 1970s brown hanging tiles all the way round - the picture isn’t our house but the tiles are the same, ours is red brick at the bottom. Anybody know how difficult it is to replace them? Or could we paint them? If anyone has done this and has before and after pictures I would love to see them. Thanks

I wouldn’t paint them, ive seen q a few houses where the tiles have been replaced with cedar boarding which looks ok imo

I like them. I would either remove or plaster over pebble dash but those tiles are a good feature I think.

Leave them, unless you want to create a maintenance liability.
Or you could go down the New England fake timber cladding route.

NoToast · 14/08/2021 21:38

Are they asbestos or tile? I have these and they are asbestos, that would create extra issues I think around removal.

'New England' style white cladding would transform it. That's what I'd do.

Sugarandtime · 16/08/2021 12:35

I have similar but am think of doing something with them as I want better insulation behind the tiles.
My concern about changing them to something completely different is that I think it would look really odd in a road where every other house still has the tiles.

Personally I think it's better to keep a house looking a bit more authentic, rather than giving it a facelift to try to be something it's not. Grand Designs has a lot to answer for! Cladding looks horrible. You'd devalue your house.

Jrg128 · 18/08/2021 21:20

Thanks everyone, I’m not sure about cladding, as I think it might look a bit out of place with the other houses around us, I’m wondering if we would be able to render it

Make sure you don't have bats. Those tiles are a classic for it.

@shaunathedheep is correct.
Tiles - just hang there and age gracefully,
Render - will require repainting every 5 or 6 years.
Cladding - will be dated in 10 years.
Save yourself time and money and LEAVE IT ALONE!

@Jrg128 I came across your thread and would like to do the same (render) - what did you go for in the end?

Papricat · 12/12/2024 13:18

Bear in mind that the wooden frames underneath are likely mostly rotten. They would require to be changed along with new tiles.
