Living opposite a mosque

Just after a bit of advice. We're thinking of putting an offer on a house that ticks most of our boxes.
It is just across the road from a (not very large) mosque, so I wonder what the potential drawbacks might be. I'm very sensitive to noise but I don't think mosques are particularly noisy places of worship, since in the UK they are not allowed to broadcast the call for prayers. (For the same reason I wouldn't want to live next to a church if the bells rang several times a day, even just on a Sunday.) I've also heard that parking can be an issue especially on Fridays, but this shouldn't be a problem as we don't really use our car much. But it might bother me if cars are constantly revving outside our windows trying to find a space? I don't know.
Does anyone have experience living near a mosque? How would you describe it?

(Respectful replies only, please. This is not about religion)

Thanks in advance :)

@viques

And I don’t know why people keep referring to Fridays as the busy day, mosques open for prayer every day during the week, devout Muslims aren’t like once a week Christians and many mosques seem to have congregations that attend daily.
Because Friday is Jummah and this is the most important of the week for prayers. My husband can't get to mosque the other days as much because of his job. But on Friday he requests that he has flexibility for prayers.

Yes, I do know Friday is the main day, my point was that prayers are held, and well attended, on other days as well. I have two churches , a temple and three mosques within 500m of my house and I know which are the busiest!

I wouldn't live anywhere near a mosque, no.

Sandrine1982 · 15/08/2021 21:19

Thanks all. I'll check out the area on Friday....

I've lived very near a mosque. The parking was horrendous, they would park illegally and nothing would be done by the council when this was reported. Unless you go on a Fri lunchtime and you don't see this problem then I would avoid.

Marmitemarinaded · 16/08/2021 06:29

Parking won’t be a huge issue.
Presumably very urban area?

Most walk or come back public transport

For me it would be the noise

Marmitemarinaded · 16/08/2021 06:30

Oh and if you complain about the noise

The police will be VERY reluctant to get involved because of potential backlash of accusations of racism

We live opposite a small .mosque. Parking is annoying but much improved as the Iman is very community minded and made a big effort to improve it so for a few years no one has ever parked directly Infront of our driver parking is an issue at Qur'an classes drop off and pick up (everyday 5 to 7). And Fridays. And everyday in Ramadan. Doesn't bother me but DH is a parking curtain twitcher!.
We do get some food from them as well which is nice and the local shop improved loads and went from a newsagents into a full on Asian supermarket. Also can always can a taxi even on Ramadan if ask nicely Grin

Absolutely no. Parking, illegal parking, noise from everyone arriving and departing, social events and clubs during the week.
Why take a risk?

Never lived opposite a mosque but have travelled to many Islamic countries and stayed in hotels next to mosques. On the first day the early prayer woke me but thereafter I just turned over and went back to sleep. This was in Dubai.

I used to live directly opposite a mosque! It was a nice place to live. There were lots of people walking along the street on a Friday but they always seemed to be in a quiet, positive mood, and it obviously always felt completely safe and calm. It's not like living opposite a nightclub (which I have also done, and would absolutely not recommend). I never heard the call to prayer, but that might have just been the way they did things at this mosque.

I'd agree with the PP who mentioned people walking there, as well. Parking didn't seem to be busier on Fridays, but there were lots of people walking up. It was a nice atmosphere. Tbh after the first week I barely ever even noticed it.

FreshApricot · 16/08/2021 18:07

This was in the UK btw (Scotland). I didn't ever notice any raucous clubs or social events! I think maybe some evenings they had meetings there but that was it?!

My mum lives right next to an ancient church. The bells which ring a lot are absolutely deafening and the whole street is unparkable during any service which is most days.
Luckily she has given up driving but nobody can park during those times and there are people coming and going all times of the day and night.
I can imagine it would be pretty much the same opposite a mosque and you might find it hard to sell on if you had to.

I live very close to a mosque. There's no noise issues at all. Parking is a nightmare on a Friday.
