Downward extractor vs wall extractor

Hi everyone,

Just about to embark on a kitchen extension and have been looking at venting induction hobs. I was wondering if anyone had one of these? If so how big is the unit underneath? I would like that in the cupboard next door rather than my pan drawers? Never mind their eye watering cost!

The alternative is I have a power wall extractor but not sure how effective this will be? Space will be around 45sq m and I don’t want it stinking of food all the time. Appreciate any input

Same position here. We have vetoed the venting hob because it adds so much cost (the hob itself plus installing the ducting.) Also when we viewed them they really looked like traps to catch all the food crumbs and took away from the cleanliness of the induction hob.
If you're going for a wall mounted fan away from the hob it needs to be 60l/s to meet building regs. We are planning to go with the Airflow Icon 60, tucked away at high level at the end of the kitchen.

@wineymummy Thank you so much for your reply. I am leaning towards this option too, and opening windows if it’s particularly smelly. Like you said it’s so expensive for what is an induction hob

We have a neff hob with integrated extractor - it’s on our island, which I love, as I can face people when I'm cooking and see what the kids are up to! We lose one drawer (still have a shallow drawer and a pan drawer beneath).

It’s recirculating- it’s too far from an outside wall to duct out. I was worried we’d get smells so had an external extractor on a wall too, which we’ve never turned on! The charcoal filters work amazingly.

We have a Bora with integrated extractor. The pieces lift out and go in the dishwasher. It’s fantastic.

Venting hobs are crap, they don’t work very well. Why can’t you just get a ceiling extractor?

We have an Elica ducted extractor hob and it's brilliant. Works really well.

furstivetreats · 14/08/2021 06:51

@welshweasel which hob have you got? We are just investigating recirculating induction hobs but not too sure where to start.

@nimbuscloud is yours vented or recirculating?

welshweasel · 14/08/2021 08:42

@LittleOverWhelmed it vents out the skirting

@furstivetreats it’s a neff one. I love it!

The only time I’ve noticed it if is I’m cooking barefoot, which isn’t often! Even then it’s not annoying

nimbuscloud · 14/08/2021 09:49

Ours vents at floor level too.

We've bought an elica tesla recirculating venting hob because our ceiling is too low for a ceiling mounted extractor (very old cottage) and the hob is on the island so can't have wall mounted.

It's not been fitted yet so can't comment on that aspect yet, but I did lots of research and this was our only realistic option given the challenges of such an old property

Thread resurrection!

@wineymummy By any chance did you end up using an Airflow Icon 60 for your kitchen extraction? We're considering using one wall mounted, 2-2.5m away from the hob that's on an island. This is to overcome issues with trying to fit a (flush) ceiling mounted extractor above the hob and deal with the issues of ducting past steels & ceiling joists, which looks tricky.

Has anyone else used an Airflow Icon 60 in a nice kitchen and able to give any feedback?

wineymummy · 28/01/2025 16:17

@ToykeyShoot yes we did. Mainly just to pass building regs - we don't often use it as it's next door to a big sliding door which is much more effective at venting the room. It's relatively noisy but not as noisy as some cooker hoods I've seen.

ToykeyShoot · 28/01/2025 16:25

Thanks @wineymummy I guessed it would be pretty noisy, with it having just the one setting (full blast!).

Figuring out external extraction above an island, where joists can be in the way, is really tricky.

Honeyroar · 28/01/2025 23:18

Where does moisture go if it’s just recirculating? Surely that’s one of the main reasons for an extractor fan?
