Hi All!
Young family looking to move to a picturesque village/pretty suburb/market town, with good public transport links to Cambridge.
Would consider within Cambridge itself, but unsure where are the nice areas and which are the ones to avoid?
£400k ish budget? Thankyou ☺️

Suggest you post in MN Local for Cambs. £400k won't go far in Cambridge itself.

Yeah you won't get more than a small 2 bed in Cambridge for that.

Or one of the nicer villages like Histon. You might get a small 2-3 bed terrace in Histon for that maybe.

I'd look at Cottenham/Longstanton/Milton, but they're not quite as nice.

And I wouldn't want to rely on public transport, especially if you want to use it during rush hour. I'm on the guided bus line, and ive spent many many mornings waiting while 2-3 full buses go by, all filled up by 6th formers from Swavesy or St Ives.

Cambridge is pretty terrible for public transport.

Look at St Ives. There's a guided bus straight into Cambridge.
You'll get a lot more for your money and it is a nice market town with a good school.

Cycling links can be better than public transport. Also, it might be worth looking at Ely and the train?

You can also look south of Cambridge on the train lines to London - the Kings X line or Liverpool Street line. North Herts can be affordable for £400k and as well as commute into Cambridge have London within reach

I would maybe look at things on train line if need more reliable public transport, maybe Meldreth /Melbourn, Saffron Walden but need to get to Audley End for train or maybe Ely. There are plans to improve public transport but will be several years yet.

Have you tried closer to Newmarket?
