Anyone used a mobile phone booster due to poor reception in house?

Hi

We have just moved into our new house and the phone reception is terrible - none downstairs, one bar 4g upstairs. I think it is because there is a large wall / steep incline at the back of the house.

I’ll need actual phone reception to take work calls, amongst other things, wifi should be ok. Can anyone recommend a booster or a solution please?

Thanks

In this situation for us we called our mobile network provider and they supplied us with a WiFi powered mobile phone booster which acted like a mini mobile phone mast. It was brilliant.

We have no phone signal in the house, but just use Wifi Calling. I don’t know whether all phones/networks offer it, or whether it’s just an iPhone+EE thing.

Had this with EE in our flat. honestly it took several phone calls and a real fight for them to send a booster. tbh i think it did very little. but i think that was more our block. it was a weird block as the minute you stepped outside there was full signal - inside pretty much nothing on any network. Wifi worked perfectly in the lounge but terrible in the bedroom 6 feet away. others in the block had the same issue. We were convinced the walls were lined with lead or something.

I get no mobile signal at all at home, so have to use WiFi calling. If your WiFi is reliable it should be fine.

WiFi calling here too. What network are you on / phone do you have?

Virgin, EE, O2, Vodafone, BT, Three at the very least all support WiFi calling.

Hi. Thanks for the replies. Am on Sky mobile, but vodaphone for work where I’ll need to make actual old school type calls as opposed to wifi calling x

OP wifi calling is just like making a normal call but it uses your wifi to do it. It's different to a FaceTime/WhatsApp call. You can call a landline from your normal phone number for example. BUT we have had wifi calling fail us before and not work including when we needed to call emergency services.

Set up wifi calling on your phone (you'll find it in settings on your phone but you usually have to get your network provider to activate it, doesn't cost anything)

Sunflowergirl1 · 11/08/2021 07:20

Most piggyback providers can't activate it. Ie GiffGaff it isn't available

Theworldisfullofgs · 11/08/2021 07:22

We have a phone booster. It's great.

ooowhataday · 11/08/2021 07:44

Contact Sky and ask them for a Femto Cell. This is the small booster they can provide that you plug in at home.
There are only 4 noble phone networks in the uk, O2, EE, H3G and Vodafone. Every other provider piggyback on their cells, for example Tesco Mobile and Giff Gaff both use O2 cells. Sky also use the O2 network.

It may be worth get a 99p pay as you go SIM card for each network and seeing if any of them have better coverage at your home, and going with that network.

I could never get great service at home on Vodafone which is what my work phone was on. I would set my work phone up to forward calls to my personal phone, which is EE, and leave my work phone handset on the upstairs landing windowsill which was one of the few places it could get decent Vodafone signal.

I have this problem. I can use WIFI calling on my personal mobile but my work mobile isn't set up for it. Apparently the contract we have at work (probably around 5000 mobiles) does not allow for it. I route my work VOIP phone through my laptop then onto my home landline. It's a bit of a pain but the only solution for me

TheDogsMother · 11/08/2021 13:56

I'm on Vodafone and just use wifi Assist. The recipient of the call will be none the wiser.

Thanks everyone this has been really helpful!!!

We're on Three and had no signal here (but neither did anyone else as it's a new build!).

We contacted them and they sent us a free box. Get full signal now, it's great!
