Steel-gate

Please help me decide.

Victorian terrace, standard side return with pitched roof on the side return and flat roof across the back with sliding doors. Actual kitchen will be in the old “dining” room space.

The steel has been put in and I need to decide whether to leave it straight and have it exposed OR get it angled at the same pitch as the roof and hidden. I will have two big velux in the pitch.

Straight and exposed?
Angled and hidden?

I'm so sorry but what is the q? Are you considering moving the steels?

Livingintheclouds · 09/08/2021 17:22

Hide it surely? But does it do the same supporting job angled?

Callmejudith · 09/08/2021 17:28

NewHouse - the steel is there now but I can choose whether to angle it and hide it or leave as is.

Living - it does the same job structurally either way. It's more an aesthetic decision

Exposed will be similar to this

Hide. But it'll cost you more.

CellophaneFlower · 09/08/2021 18:25

I would have said hide... but the picture you've shown is making a feature of it which I think looks great if you want industrial style, bare bricks etc. For me I'd have to hide though, due to spiders and dust 🙈

Surely the decision as to it being straight or pitched should have been made before it was installed ? It’s going to be a lot more work now to get it changed if you want it altered.

I would say you need to have new calculations done before steel work can be changed ? That steel looks like it’s holding up a lot of weight, so not a simple job.

Chumleymouse · 09/08/2021 18:44

And let’s hope that hammer doesn’t fall on anybody’s head 🙄

PragmaticWench · 09/08/2021 19:06

Wouldn't it need to be longer if it was angled?

FourTeaFallOut · 09/08/2021 19:20

I like the exposed beams and changing things now is likely to cause annoying delays - not to mention the expense. Has something rocked your confidence?

Callmejudith · 09/08/2021 20:10

Essentially the builder screwed up so I can now decide whether to stick with what he’s put in or he redoes it with the pitch. I am growing to love the idea of exposed (and get to spend the money elsewhere)

Ah, it's a bold look to just be dropped on you. I do like it but it could be hard to live with if it's essentially a mistake.

Chumleymouse · 09/08/2021 22:36

If you do leave it exposed, it will need to be coated with fire resistant paint to satisfy the building regs man.
