Have you ever removed a fire place?

We want to remove our fire place ( surround and hearth) - it’s not used and we would rather have the wall space. We don’t have a chimney breast, the Chimney is built on the outside / external wall of the house . So, how easy is it? Anyone done this? Thanks.

Builders did thus for us years ago as part of other renovations. Didn't seem hard.

Very easy. Make sure you put a 'hit and miss' style vent where it gets boarded up though otherwise you'll get damp

Surprisingly easy, the hardest bit is sorting out the flooring. We had a fireplace company come and replace our big fireplace with a smaller one. Not quite the same thing but it only took an afternoon. We needed to get a plasterer in afterwards to make good properly, and recarpeted the whole room.

Yeah, my parents had it done. It was an easy job.

is the wall shared with a neighbour?
if yes, then talk to them and ask them to allow you to take photos of their side of the wall (ie in their room) - in case there's any damage having "before" photos will help you both!

builders advised us to do this, NDN were happy to comply, then they did the same a few years later when they had building work done

Thanks all.

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba - no shared wall, that side is just our garden.
I’m glad to hear others have done it successfully! It feels like it’s easier than it should be.
