Do you really have to wait 6 weeks before painting a newly plastered ceiling?

Just that really.

New plasterboards put up and plastered over, it'[s drying out nicely, how long do I have to wait to paint it? Six weeks? Really?

Did you ask the plasterer? I'd be interested to know this. I guess its to make sure its completely dry to get the best result.

Whats the hurry?

We did a few mist coats once it looked dry after a few days (50/50 water to paint) and then left it a week and then painted it. No issues at all. Been several years now. Depends on how damp your house is really.

Never done this...just wait a few days until it’s the light pink dry colour then start with mist coat and then proper coat.....been doing this for the 32 years I’ve been a home owner....never been a problem

Depends if it's hot weather or damp but a couple of weeks I think.

RolloTomassi · 08/08/2021 12:24

Good god, no. Currently redecorating at our place, we've waited about 4 days for plaster to dry before applying a mist coat first, then normal paint. All looks good! Done it this way before too.

Depemds on how hot or damp it is.
Having seen paint lift when painted too soon.
I'd be getting the dehumidifiers going and i would also second the 50/50 water&paint undercoat

no

ceilings are very thin, and are not made of thick damp bricks.

Look at the colour.

How long did it take to go pale pink all over, with no dark spots?

Unless you have had a burst pipe it should be a couple of days.

Lime plastered ceilings are much thicker and take longer.

if you have any reason to suppose the plaster is still drying out, you can use a porous, non-vinyl paint such as Dulux Supermatt. It is not very durable but nobody is going to be rubbing againsy your ceiling or wiping it clean.

Cheers all

I also wait till it's dried a salmon colour, mist colour then paint!

No
How long you wait depends on the weather.

Is it lath and plaster, plasterboard, or what? Makes a difference.
