Do induction hobs scratch easily?

Mine has just been installed so no going back but was surprised it looks a bit fragile. Am aware I'll need to ensure bottoms of my cast iron pans are smooth and avoid shaking them about. I've ordered a soft cover for when it's not in use also. Any other tips on avoiding scratching or other damage hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance

The one in our previous house was fine. In some light there were scratches but not really noticeable at all.

Mine scratched very quickly Sad

You can see very easily which zones I use the most, from the scratching. I assume there must have been something underneath the base of the pans.

I still love using it though.

A tip from a friend was to put good quality kitchen paper under the pans when you use them because induction won’t burn it. You can use them to clean up.

It’s also better to buy smooth bottomed stainless steel pans vs iron, but if you do take a magnet with you when you go shopping. It has to stick firmly all across the bottom of the pan.

The worst thing for scratching our ceramic hob (not induction) was a 'rustic' casserole dish where the unglazed bottom was slightly rough.

Ours has been in for 10 years and you can tell which ring I use most, but the scratches are really tiny. If it was really bad I would just swap it out for another one, they’re the same price as many bog standard white goods (and they get replaced earlier in my experience).

I do an awful lot of cooking and my induction hob over time certainly picked up a scratches and looked worn before the glass eventually cracked. Apart from the ease of cleaning I can't stand induction hobs and once it was broken I went back to gas.

Had mine 3 years (used a lot) not a single scratch Grin I love them

Jng1 · 05/08/2021 10:51

Had mine for about 10 years and it's fine.
Key things:

  • lift, don't drag pans across it
  • make sure pan bottoms are clean and smooth (especially Le Cruset type ones)
  • clean hob daily to remove any food debris etc which could harden

Ours has never scratched, and it's been heavily used over the past 7 years.

I do not, however, recommend dropping a cast iron pan on the edge of it!

PotteringAlong · 05/08/2021 15:57

Mine’s been in for just over 2 years and it’s not scratched!

Zhampagne · 05/08/2021 19:13

Ours has never scratched but the glass did break when I dropped a bowl on it so yeah - don’t do that.

Thanks all! Have been careful with pans (used my biggest Le Creuset today!) and bought a protective cover for when it's not in use that actually looks really nice so that will hopefully help to protect it.

Do they make induction hobs with lids, so that the lid can he used as a work surface? I need to buy one.

Could you link to this please?

Scratches never bothered me, but I never had one last more than 4 or 5 years without breaking. First rather dramatically shorted out. Second one I found with a big crack across it, one day.

Panickingpavlova · 07/08/2021 23:48

In John Lewis so many hobs had chips
