Anyone installed a temporary kitchen?

We are about to move to a house with a small kitchen at the back of the house. We would eventually extend across the back to make a large kitchen/family room. But this wouldn't be for a couple of years. The kitchen as it is is pretty grim - warped cabinet doors, and ancient oven and not so great worktops.

So we would want to replace the kitchen as soon as we move, but as it'd only be for a couple of year's use we want to do it as economically and as environmentally friendly as possible (as in try to reuse stuff in the new kitchen if possible, or free-cycle it when the time comes). Does anyone have any tips for installing a temporary kitchen - would somewhere like Wickes that does a kitchen installation service be a good idea? Or get an Ikea kitchen and find a local fitter? Thanks!

I did this - got an IKEA kitchen for £3k including oven, hob and extractor. It’s a great little kitchen.

Wow £3k is great! Did you install it yourself or get a fitter (we are rubbish at DIY), if it was a fitter, how much did they charge? Thanks :)

I got a fitter, but I can’t remember how much it cost, sorry! It took a week to get the walls plastered and the kitchen fitted, tiled and painted so it won’t be cheap but I can’t remember it being extremely expensive either.

There are a few companies selling used or ex display kitchens which might be a possibility e.g

You can buy used kitchens on eBay as well directly from people ripping them out to upgrade, and many can be in really nice condition.

We have a temporary kitchen at the moment, although, the existing kitchen isn’t awful just dated and a small narrow galley space, leading onto the existing rear extension which was previously a dining room, we will eventually use the whole space as kitchen/diner including knocking through another wall, anyway, we just had a freestanding cooker installed in the “new” space, using a large table next to it as an extra work surface, and freestanding fridge/freezer. It’s working nicely. Maybe ripping out and freestanding units/appliances could work in your situation.

We bought an ex display kitchen once from a show room , it was pretty much like new , not particularly my taste but did the job

My father tried to sell a poggenpol kitchen a few years ago and couldn't give it away,. Definitely pick up second-hand and don't worry if the doors do not match.
