New internal doors needed

Hello,

I am going through a divorce and am in the process of getting the house ready to put on the market (stbx has property elsewhere that he is living in but I can’t afford to buy him out plus I need to move anyway). It needs new internal doors as some are damaged and the handles are well used/awful.
Where is the best place to get some and how do I get someone to fit them? There is one double door and 12 singles. Anyone know what sort of price this will be? I was thinking oak doors or oak veneer.

I'd look for a joiner to hang the doors and then ask him or her where to get them. There are loads of online door places though. I wouldn't spend lots on doors as I don't think they are something that people notice too much.

Are none of the doors you have salvageable?

The handles are probably going to be the most expensive part.

A carpenter can hang doors better and faster than a handyman or general builder. Find someone by personal recommendation, not from an advertising website masquerading as a recommendations site.

examine your frames for condition and square. modern door linings are not expensive, and can be quicker and give better results than trying to fit a new door into a wonky lining.

If you want a low-quality door that will look OK in the Estate Agents photos, you can buy a modern flush or pressed door. These are made of air with a thin decorative skin of ply or hardcoard and are complete rubbish, they can be bought around £30 upwards.

A solid-core paint-grade door is a decent item.

Veneered doors cost more, or are lower quality.

You can get good quality knobs, handles and hinges from here or buy the same articles at higher prices from boutique retailers and DIY outlets.

Decide early if you want brass, chrome, or brushed door furniture, and match it all.

Your homebuyer may well rip them out if they don't share your taste.

If you have, or need, fire doors, you will need something quite different.

Change the handles and give them a lick of paint. Unlikely anyone will notice them.

How do you find someone though if you don't have the network to gather personal recommendations?

neighbour. plumber. chiropodist. parish magazine. high quality tradie. Owner of well-restored old house.

(good building workers know other good building workers, and will not recommend anybody they think will reflect badly on them)

(bad ones also hang around together)

Try Facebook Market place for internal doors perhaps. I've given away a few on there. Just white ones though.

We used a local FB for a carpenter recommendation and paid £40 a door earlier this year (midlands). Took a bit less than 2 days for 7 door plus hardware
