Do I need a double oven??

I have always wanted an eye level oven… but now I’ve seen how it would look in our kitchen I realise it won’t work because it reduces the available worktop space. So I’m back to built under or free-standing - no room for a range cooker. Built under doubles seem very small, freestanding just seem to ruin the sleek finish I wanted. Should I just stick to a built under single? We’ve had that for years but I hanker after a double oven again.
Should add we’re a family of 5, none of us are especially keen cooks!! We do need space to make decent meals though!

I would say yes, always. But I speak as someone who had three ovens built into her kitchen, then had to move abroad and has rented houses with one tiny oven ever since.

EL8888 · 23/07/2021 21:30

We have a small double oven, new house has a bigger double ovens and l can’t wait! 2 adults but we love our food and cooking

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 21:30

Op I've been exactly the same, I really eye height oven, but decided I didn't want to loose the counter space, I asked on here and enough people convinced me that one oven is enough.

floppybit · 23/07/2021 21:31

I have an eye level double oven and I use the top bit to store baking trays! Will go back to single next time I think. At least in a tall housing the cavities are a reasonable size, but the built under doubles are ridiculously small.

Carrott21 · 23/07/2021 21:31

Always. How do you have one thing grilling and the other in the oven?

AssemblySquare · 23/07/2021 21:34

@Carrott21 we don’t! Haven’t been able to do that since we moved here.

I have a built under double oven (top one doubles as the grill - which I rarely use). I can honestly say I only ever use the small top oven on Christmas day, if at all! I would far rather have a bigger main oven than the split version.

Carrott21 · 23/07/2021 21:36

Yes, hardly use top oven, but use top oven as a grill and use oven. Had an undercounter double for 10 years and it was plenty big enough. Now have eye level.

bigbluebus · 23/07/2021 21:37

I've had a 110cm range cooker for 17 years. I think I've used the 2nd oven twice - once was to help cook enough turkey dinosaurs and chips for a 6th birthday party, the other time was at Christmas. I cook all meals from scratch but don't batch cook so can easily manage without 2 ovens

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 21:38

I also have an air fryer, it's small but very powerful and I have not done any stuffing etc in it yet but I reckon it would supplement a single oven much better than a whole other oven.

bathorshower · 23/07/2021 21:39

We had a free standing cooker with a double oven fitted a couple of years ago. While I rarely use both ovens as ovens, I often want to grill and use an oven at the same time - we had a separate grill before, and I would never choose to live without one now.

missminimum · 23/07/2021 22:37

We are having a new kitchen, the designer suggested a eye level single oven, with a combination microwave ( at a cost of over £700). I was not convinced I would make full usecof a comination oven, so decided on a double oven. The second ovens in double ovens are often very small, which I thought would not be useful, but have gone for one with a bigger second oven than many other makes, otherwise a double oven would not have been very useful

Travielkapelka · 23/07/2021 22:50

I couldn’t manage with one oven. I have 2 eye level ones and use them both. I find under counter ones impossible to use

Lemonmelonsun · 23/07/2021 22:52

Miss our "designer" was also pushing an oven microwave.

Throwthecam · 23/07/2021 22:52

I really miss having a separate oven and grill. If you want to do something like grilled meat, bacon, sausages with chips its a pain!

Karwomannghia · 23/07/2021 22:55

I often use 2 especially for Sunday roasts to do Yorkshire puddings hotter in the top and it’s easier to grill without tripping over a massive door hanging open. I’ve got a built under and it’s fine for 5 of us.

TheNemesisOfLame · 23/07/2021 23:07

I've got an under counter double oven.

I think I'd struggle to get a family sized turkey in the main oven. But have managed everything else apart from a bloody tagine I bought that was too tall.

I much prefer the separate grill option and as a pp said not tripping over the oven door when grilling.
And being able to have 2 ovens on different temperatures.
Whilst I think they are designed to be used at eyelevel, it works for me as I need the counter space more.

NotMeNoNo · 23/07/2021 23:41

Our current house has a single oven. We do miss having a separate grill. If we replaced it with a high cabinet it would only take up the section of worktop occupied by the microwave. But we've coped four years without getting round to it. Freestanding cookers are best for a single unit space.

jaundicedoutlook · 24/07/2021 00:11

Just done our kitchen (finished literally yesterday, bar some tiling and painting). Went for two Siemens built under ovens, one with steam, one without. Not had much chance to use them yet, but looking good. Not sure I’ll miss the old house setup of one eye level oven and one below that which was a complicated oven/microwave combi which we rarely used.

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2021 00:15

I have a double oven and I can't imagine doing without it as we cook a lot.

AlmostSummer21 · 24/07/2021 00:22

My friend had a double under counter in her nee kitchen about a year ago and she hates it, wishes she stuck to the single like they'd had previously.

I wanted a wall oven too, but like you, don't want to lose the counter space - so I'm reluctantly getting a single under counter one. Separate induction hob. Freestanding don't look so good IMHO.

Holothane · 24/07/2021 00:29

We’ve a double oven cooker and since my arthritis has got worse the top one is a life saver, it’s small but it does the job.

Zinnia · 24/07/2021 00:35

Had a built-under double for 10 years in this house and a few more in the one before that. Can't imagine not having one. We use the top oven a lot for heating stuff up (chips, pizza, whatever) and grilling, and the big one for baking, roasts etc. It's never been too small for us (family of four). We cook a lot from scratch (chips and pizzas are the exception!) and this set-up works perfectly. Would love an eye-level setup but the built-under one is absolutely fine.

sashh · 24/07/2021 00:36

I live alone so use my small oven more than the big one. You might not need it now but depending on the age of your children do you want teenagers using the main oven for a pizza?

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 24/07/2021 08:19

I had a double under counter in the old house. When we moved, I picked a single oven instead. I never used the top small oven. I don’t grill though.
