Does your home decor coordinate between rooms?

Do you think it matters?

We recently decorated the kitchen in white and dark green (mid Brunswick from Little Greene). It's not to everyone's taste I'm sure but I love it. The problem now is that we're decorating the hall and have no idea how to get it to compliment the kitchen (or whether that even matters). There is no door between the hall and the kitchen but they are separated by a 2nd section of hall (maybe 2.5m long) which is painted white. That said, you can still catch a glimpse of the dark green kitchen cabinets from the main hallway.

DP is convinced that it doesn't matter at all as they are different rooms and in any case are separated by the white 2nd hallway.. he wasn't to decorate the hall in a deep teal (pleat from Little Greene, which I agree is a lovely colour) but I'm worried it will make the house look weird and disjointed. We can't agree on any other colours 😭.

Please Mumsnet - tell us what to do!

Interesting replies thank you very much.

Neutral walls with coordinating features is probably the look I'd favour but the toddler issue is pushing us towards a deep colour under the dado rail and neither of us really like deep neutrals (grey/greige/cream etc)

I like things to flow so there is some white, blue, green and pink in all rooms but in different proportions e.g. the hallway is white and the only pink is the phone but the sittingroom is pink with the only green a small detail in the curtains and the kitchen is green and has no blue (yet). It took my eldest DC (who is quite arty) a couple of weeks to realise the phone and sittingroom matched but DH was completely confused when she said it, he never notices these kind of details.

Red thread - an explanation of how to create a sense of flow between rooms. I think for most people there is a red thread of some kind in their house because you keep being attracted to the same type of thing. So on the link above someone said they had a piece of vintage brown furniture in each room, that's their red thread.

I think it doesn’t have to match if the tones are somewhat similar. See our hallway pic below…f&b Shaded White (I think), next to an Inchyra Blue room…totally different but doesn’t jar

Yeah there's some style consistency, mostly in the wall art and furniture, I don't really like consistency in colours, my rooms don't face the same direction and they don't have the same purpose.

Basically, if it wasn't for size and purpose, all my furniture and wall art could go in any other room without looking weird.
