Cheltenham v's Reading v's Bristol

Hola! Can anyone advice which of these places would offer a good life for a youngish 30s person looking for a bit of 'buzz'?

I have a budget of 350k for a decent sized modern 3-bed house, although admit I'm struggling to find much in Reading! I've spent a couple of days in Bristol but my initial impression was that it seemed a little run down, although I wasn't there long enough to get a proper feel for it.

Cheltenham appeals, although im mot sure if there are many 'bars' as opposed to pubs in the way of nightlife? It's nice to get your heels on and have a dance at the weekend!

Work wise, I work as a contractor in IT so will be looking for project management type roles.

Any info would be vert much appreciated !! Smile

Ok. Then I would look in Henleaze, st Andrew, Bishopston and Horfield in Bristol. But you probably would struggle to get a three bed unless you get something you need to do up in Cheltenham Montpellier or around bath road.

Here are just some of the 3-4 bed semis in Cheltenham, some even detached, for under 350k. I could be wrong but the areas don't look that bad to me?

Could you tell me what in particular u like about Cheltenham or is it more the case of familiarity and family near by?

If your looking for fun it's Bristol. My family are from Cheltenham it's lovely to visit but far from a fun place to be one week there can feel like 10 weeks

Personally I wouldn't live in any of the areas of those Cheltenham houses. Up Hatherley is okay but it's literally all housing estates and is on the outskirts of town. Can't think of any bars / restaurants etc anywhere near there. But I've not lived In Cheltenham for a long time.

kirinm · 01/08/2021 09:39

Arle / Hester's way were rough.

kirinm · 01/08/2021 09:44

There are some much nicer houses on then the ones you've linked here. Do you want a new build?

Charlton King
Leckhampton
Gloucester Road
London Road

All of those areas are nicer than the ones you've picked.

Gloschick · 01/08/2021 09:59

Agree with posters above, your first one is in spring bank which is def rough (see link). As a rule of thumb, I wouldn't look at anything west of the railway line.

OP you are going about this the wrong way round. You are in a luxurious position of not being tied to schools, needing a child-friendly space etc. You have decided what kind of property you want, and then looked for it on rightmove, and you have come up with a bunch of nice houses in dangerous / boring areas. What you need to do is go to Cheltenham / Bristol etc, find an area that you like the vibe of, and then look at what you can afford.

cleocleo16 · 01/08/2021 10:27

But don't you wonder why you can get a detached house in that area for that price? It's either a rough area or it's far out of town. I agree with the poster below you have your house move totally around the wrong way.

I think you are being rather innocent with what you think you are going to be able to get for your price and your criteria. Any nicer areas of Bristol you can't afford and you don't want to live in a rougher area and don't want to compromise on size. So, Bristol is out for you. I would concentrate on the other two areas. I had a quick nosey around Bristol and it's shocking what that budget would get you these days.

Nice road in Leamington, easy walk into town. Popular houses. Neighbours likely "professionals", would wager at least some work for JLR but plenty of job opportunities around.

Sorry I thought Cheltenham was small? I'll be driving anyway, I don't need to be walking distance from bars?

Very strange to consider MK or Bicester as buzzy. Previous posters suggestion of leamington spa is genius though. Lots of professional work opportunities, beautiful buildings, nice bars and shops, strong cafe culture

SaltySheepdog · 02/08/2021 04:47

Depending on where you’re going driving through Cheltenham can be slow and sprawling

I don't know England that well. I know Bicester isn't but it's just 15 mins on the train or driving to Oxford which is pretty close. Also the hub in Milton Keynes has loads of bars and restaurants and shops everywhere but I was very unsure when I visited. Will definitely check out Leamington Spa!
