Black sink

We’ve recently moved house and the kitchen is over 20 years old, but perfectly functional and classic, so we’re living with it for a while. However the sink is chipped and battered. It was once white but now stained. I found a lovely black sink the right size and am confident it’ll look good (black flecks in the worktop and black appliances). My friend told me the sink will show every bit of dirt. It can’t be worse than a white one though can it? Has anyone got any experience?
Thank you!

We fitted one in the utility room, it's been in for two months and I already want to replace it. It always looks filthy and shows up every tiny scratch. I would avoid!

I moved to a place with a black sink, it never looks clean and scrubbing just scratches it more.

Can't wait to change it.

I loved my black sink- when I bought it.

Covered in limescale

Shows everything

Just don’t do it.

Flowers500 · 23/07/2021 00:41

NO don't do it!!!! Will look filthy and stained and just disgusting, no matter what you do to it.

Our black sink in the kitchen looks lovely when freshly cleaned but as soon as its used for a glass of water or to rinse hands it looks not so great.
The limescale looks white when it dries.
If I choose again it'll be stainless steel.

Don't do it. Stainless steel is the way to go.

I have 2 black sinks - 1 in kitchen, and 1 in utility room.

They are both fairly elderly and we live in a very hard water area.

They were looking a bit shabby until I read about food grade mineral oil - the sort of stuff that you may, or may not, apply to your wooden chopping board to keep it in fine fettle.

Apply the mineral oil to sink and draining area, "painting" it on with a bit of kitchen roll.

Leave it to "soak in" for half an hour or so, then buff up with clean kitchen roll.

It does make a big difference - but you do have to keep doing it weekly/monthly/annually depending on what you throw down the sink and how often and how fussy you are.

Oh no, how disappointing. I had visions of how fabulous it would look. Just out of interest do any of you have a white sink? (Desperately wondering if it would be better than what we’re used to).
We’re in a hard water area and have a water softener, but it’s not attached to the drinking water tap which is in that sink.

I have black composite sink. It’s got a slight fleck through it and I love it. Had it for 2 years now it’s easy to clean and I think looks lovely. However we are not in a hard water area so no limescale issues here.

ILOVEALLCAKES · 23/07/2021 07:09

I have the same as @RJnomore1 - a black composite sink which we’ve had for 3 years. It looks as good as new. I am also in a very soft water region.

We had a black sink in our old house and it looked great. Hard water area. Originally an IKEA one, but we broke it (our fault) and replaced it with one from Screwfix. Both had a slight shimmer so didn't show every spec.

EverythingDelegated · 23/07/2021 09:28

We had one. It was awful, showed every bit of dirt, never looked clean, we changed it for stainless steel in the end.

We have a lovely black sink in a hard water area but I certainly wouldn't choose it again. It looks good for 25 minutes after I have cleaned it and polished it with rapeseed oil/ any cooking oil but that's it. It looks especially bad around the taps

Lennybythewood · 23/07/2021 13:02

I also love my black sink, but again live in a soft water area so no issues with marks from limescale.

ineedaholidayandwine · 23/07/2021 13:13

We've just moved to a house with a black composite sink, looks great, no marks, no stains, no scratches and easy to clean.
The stainless steel one at the old house however did have scratches and was looking a bit shabby.
Hard water area here
