I'm absolutely blown away by this tiny flat

It's a bit like one of those wooden puzzle cubes. It's obviously not for permanent living unless you live by yourself, but it's so clever. Clearly it's best suited to a climate that you can be out most of the day, and not a cold, rainy country.

I do think the designer could have managed the child's bed a bit better though, it seems a bit clunky with how the legs work.

I pity the poor sod who ends up sleeping above the bathroom, it must get quite noisy.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/07/2021 16:43

Yes, I think I would do without the sleeping loft altogether and have a nice high ceiling in the bathroom. But I hate having over-night guests anyway, especially if I can hear them snoring/farting/turning restlessly. Perhaps a hammock on the balcony would do instead?

I also didn't like the way the shower enclosure worked, anybody who over indulged during lockdown (me, for instance) would have a bit of an issue squeezing tummy and boobs around the swing of the door.

I only got 4 minutes in but it looks so inconvenient to stay in. If the child is sleeping you cant make yourself anything to eat!

Also- none of those cupboards are big enough for a cornflake box.

Gingernaut · 22/07/2021 16:54

That is THE tiniest microwave I've ever seen.

PiccalilliChilli · 22/07/2021 16:55

That would drive me crazy in no time. I like my space!

MotionActivatedDog · 22/07/2021 16:58

I like small spaces but I really hate having to move furniture round to do essential daily tasks. Even as a child I hated that we had to fold away the beds in our caravan every morning.

thenightsky · 22/07/2021 17:03

Where was the top for the table?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/07/2021 17:08

I did feel that the inserts for the table should have had a hiding space, but they were just leaning against the wall opposite the sofa.

I'm also completely entranced by places that have moving walls, although they are definitely best suited to solo living as otherwise you might open up the kitchen and squash your boyfriend who is in the sitting room. Grin

I think his description of it as like a campervan was a really good way to think about it. It would drive me nuts to live in, but if space is crazy expensive there then it's probably a huge improvement on the other, presumably equally teeny, holiday flats.

I wish he'd shown the table fully up - I loved how expandible it was but it would have been good to see with the top on it. I missed that the inserts were against the wall, I'd have expected them to be hidden away more cleverly.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/07/2021 17:16

What I like about Gary Chang's apartment is that he is clearly not a minimalist. I think I would struggle with the paring down aspect of small space living.

Love it, but would not fit my dvd collection let alone my books!
Plus how would you get privacy? The child would always see you.
You never be able to watch anything scary without worrying they’d see/hear, then when they were older they wouldn't be able to have their own tv!

HelgaDownUnder · 22/07/2021 17:17

Imagine a three month lockdown with a child...

ditalini · 22/07/2021 17:18

Yes, I love Gary Changs apartment, much more than the Spanish one, but it's a real home rather than an occasional living space.

The Spanish apartment is ingenious and I think the architect did an amazing job, but it's quite plywoody looking.

ditalini · 22/07/2021 17:19

He's really clear though - it's a holiday house, not for permanent or long term living. They probably have an amazing apartment in Barcelona and this is just to escape to at weekends and for the odd week.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/07/2021 17:21

I think on the privacy thing, the designer says that they have their main dwelling an hour away in Barcelona, so perhaps they just keep their knickers on until they get home. Also for the lockdown, I expect they stayed in their main home.

A lot of families where I am (South Dublin) have a holiday mobile home on the Wicklow/Wexford coast and it's probably the same sort of issue on the privacy front. I've never asked, I wonder if I can drop it into the conversation subtly.

I've seen another video of Gary Chang's apartment taken at a later date, but I can't find it now. He changed that yellow window for clear glass and it's much less oppressive.

I’ve lived in flats that size permanently. I would t have wanted to have a child there I have to say but as a couple 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Pretty normal in most big cities in France tbh. It’s the common size of a ‘studio’.

MyriadeOfThings · 22/07/2021 17:38

It’s well designed though, apart from the bed above the shower. Who would want to stay there.p?
I also noticed that whatever he is using to go up and down wasn’t shown….

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/07/2021 17:38

I also really like this one, although I wouldn't use chipboard as I don't really like the look. It reminds me of a time when I was temping as a student and was pulling medical records in a hospital, all the shelving was on a rail and you moved each one by turning a handle. I particularly like that this house also has a large space that is free of moving walls, less danger of inadvertent squashing.

Yes, I noticed that too. Surely there should have been a pop-out ladder or stair case. Whatever he was doing didn't look at all safe. But, as I said before, I don't like sharing a sleeping space so I would definitely have ditched that for a bit more headroom in the bathroom.

PickAChew · 22/07/2021 17:44

I could probably have got into that over bathroom sleeping spece but would never have been able to get out again. Imagine being up there and needing the loo at 5am after a few too many.

Classicbrunette · 22/07/2021 17:50

Imagine having that in London ! Fabulous for an over night stay after big events, but it would drive me potty to stay there any longer. But it is ingenious.

Pucarbuile · 22/07/2021 18:08

I think it's ingenious for occasional use but I feel panicked at the thought of that over bathroom bed.

rosalindwi · 22/07/2021 18:13

Parents clearly using the bathroom for sex

Twinstudy · 22/07/2021 18:29

It's very clever but even looking at that sleeping space above the bathroom makes me feel panicky. Fuck all chance you'd get me up there, I'd be much happier kipping on the balcony!
