New bathroom - where do I start?

Sunny2021 · 21/07/2021 19:46

I want to completely re-do my bathroom - remove bath & shower, new floor, new tiles, new bath & shower etc. Can anyone recommend a good, affordable company that’ll do it all? Thanks 😊

It will be more affordable if you can manage trades yourself and remove the existing suite yourself?

Has anyone used Plumbworld? Looks affordable?

Yep in the middle of having my bathroom fitted, everything bought from Plumbworld! Plumber is happy with everything so far, although bath taps were missing 2 rubber seals so make sure to check everything thoroughly. Customer service good though and sorted everything out.

You’re much better off sourcing local recommendations for the fitter, and getting the bits yourself, than going through an all-in-one showroom and fit type place (which generally lose interest and have crap customer service once they’ve secured your business).

Most bathroom places have regular online sales – never buy full price.

Buy everything yourself and get a local fitter to do it, you'll save a load of money. We've had ours gutted, completely retiled, new everything and the wiring for the shower replaced. This was all for about £3800, including midrange kit, apart from the shower, which we did go a bit mad on.

We found a two man outfit via local news and views group on Facebook.
We bought everything ourselves from Plumbworld, Victoria Plum and a local (ish) family bathroom supply company.

Here’s some random starter thoughts:
Are you refreshing the room with up to date stuff, new colours or do you want to move things about as well?

Do you really need a bath?

Wall tiles or panels ( some on MN would rather never wash again than have panels )

If areas are replastered to be painted, they’ll need 4-7 days to dry out (depending on time of year). Paint them before you put anything back in the room.

Will you replace the door as well? The frame will likely need a repainting.

Putting down lights in? What about an extractor too? Can you live with their switches being in the hall/landing to not have a pull switch and not have an extractor come on every time someone switches the light on.

You’ll be without the room for two weeks , thereabouts.

You can get touch switches which can go on the wall in the bathroom. When I got my bathroom done I had a pull switch which operated the light and fan together changed to a double touch switch which operates them separately. The bathroom fitter suggested it. The only problem is it confuses visitors who can't work out where the light switch is!

@MissKittyCat
You can put switches in bathrooms so long as they’re distant from water but I could not persuade the electrician to put them in.
Who fitted yours?

It was fitted by the electrician who works for the bathroom company. It is a special light switch with a high waterproof rating so can be used in the bathroom. It is a flat glass plate with no moving parts.

@MissKittyCat Don’t suppose you have a link or the exact name of that switch, do you? Refitting the world’s tiniest bathroom and layout makes a switch directly outside well nigh impossible, and I hate the pull cords…
