Nottingham/Beeston....

Hello---just wondering about Beeston and Chilwell. Are there certain areas to avoid for young families? Or more desirable schools and that are near transit?

I've done a little looking and Beeston seems like a friendly and walkable town with enough to do and easy access to Nottingham. Also looking at West Bridgford but wondering if it is too pricey and maybe boring ?

any advice would be great. thanks in advance.
potentially moving from Canada....

Beeston is amazing (live there now).

WB is overrated (used to live there).

MrsSaraR · 20/07/2021 16:20

thanks for that quick reply.
that's the impression that i seem to be getting via different chatboards good to know it's consistent. :o)

is West Bridgford like--good for the "the newlywed and nearly dead kind of thing?"

someone i know who lived in Sherwood said that in Beeston there are areas to avoid? we don't drive so i would like to live w/in walking distance of groceries and schools. i guess i can look at the map.

WB is awful. Beeston is a bit less twatty. There's loads that you can do/get to without driving plus it's on the tram route if you want to get into town.

Orf1abc · 20/07/2021 16:57

I'd say Beeston and Sherwood are pretty similar, both have less ideal parts but nowhere I'd avoid completely. For Beeston there's the tram and the bus to Nottingham, Sherwood just the bus but very frequent. Agree about WB.

Do you know where you'll be working?

Beeston is close to the university and has loads of university people if that is your crowd. Good local shops & primary schools and library but nothing pretentious

BettaSplenden · 20/07/2021 17:56

Beeston is nice. Toton is ok too. Chilwell is ok but Inham Nook is not a good place. I lived in beeston for a while. It was nice but I avoided the studenty bits as not my scene. Beeston Rylands was nice enough. Toton is quite expensive and nothing to do there so basically not worth it if you want places to go on your doorstep. Good for m1 and tram etc though

Beeston is the adultery capital of the UK! It is nice, has a decent high street and a big Tesco.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/07/2021 18:08

Attenborough is lovely. Just slightly further out from Beeston. I live in Lenton and love it!

The HS2 hub is supposed to be being built at Toton. I can't keep up on whether it's still going to be or not!

Bibbleybetto · 20/07/2021 18:38

Even inham nook is fine, it had a bad rep years ago but I've been here a decade, have fab neighbours and not had any problems. DC have been happy in both schools and Sunnyside now feeds into George Spencer which is another positive for the Nook :-)

MrsSaraR · 20/07/2021 18:38

what's the HS2 hub? Is this a good thing? i read about a large building complext being built in Beeston for student housing 100+ units....

oh--i see-looked it up. that would make it a more desirable place to live for sure. Toton. i would imagine.

Beeston - quite studenty in areas - loads of houses with permanent to let boards up for students. Chilwell always looks a bit like there's not much to do for me - but the schools over that way are good (Eskdale Juniors is outstanding and Sunniside has a cracking rep for SEN).

Toton - lots in terms of kids' groups and the usual circuit of paid after school activities and generally a nice community feel. Schoolswise - Chetwynd primary is outstanding, Banks Road infants bloody should be cos it was amazing (guess where mine went) and the SEN provision was great... the juniors that it feeds into... um... well... yeah. Again though - check the HS2 situation out as there's a lot in terms of nature reserves and open space that is destined to be lost if it gets built. George Spencer as a secondary is rated outstanding - I'm personally not keen on sending my kids there as I don't think they'll be a good fit.

Stapleford - bit more down-market than Toton with some rough ex-council areas - but some fairly decent starter home type houses. Again - check the HS2 routing as there are some bits of it due to be impacted quite badly (mutter mutter don't get me started). Again, fair mix of kids' activity type things to do - local high street has suffered like most local high streets. Schools - mixed - William Lilley and Albany Infants - Albany feeds into the same named Juniors around the corner... William Lilley feeds into Fairfield Primary for KS2 making that school quite "top heavy" in terms of KS2 numbers versus the infants. St Johns is C of E and a really small school (admits 15) if that is more what appeals to you.

(I may have done a LOT of school enquiring about recently as I've just had to move my kids!)

The other thing in terms of moving over this way with a family is that some of the schools do have a fair amount of movement and places coming up because of the army barracks and military families moving in and out of the area (my best mate's going soon :( )

MN tends to like West Bridgford but I've never liked the place when I've gone over there - it feels very much overpriced for me and a bit "too" MN for me - I like this side of things - quick and easy to get to the tram, the stuff I want is here (and you would drag me away from my hairdresser kicking and screaming cos she's amazeballs) and you've got the option of Derby OR Nottingham for things like parks and playgrounds (we tend to jump between West Park when the splash pad is open, Wollaton Hall, Markeaton over in Derby as the mood takes us). Only drawback is being so close to the M1 that everyone who vaguely knows us randomly decides to "just pop in" as they're passing to save money on service station coffee!

WOW @CoffeeWithCheese that was a very fun read. thanks so much--i appreciate and i get a great picture of what's what.
