Bath with shower - water going everywhere!!!

JaffacakeJanine · 18/07/2021 11:06

Help! We just bought a new property (exciting)
with a bath/shower combo. When I took a shower for the first time, the water flooded the floor and went everywhere.

More info - we have a shower screen that extends out to cover about a third of the side of the bath, and a detachable shower head which is quite difficult to angle. It's also a very strong jet stream at a diagonal angle, so it flies out at the opposite wall and bounces around everywhere Shock.

I'm looking to do future renos on the bathroom, and wondering if a waterfall type shower head that has a stream downward would mean the water flies out less?! I'd ideally not like a giant screen covering the entire bath all the time. My partner hates shower curtains with a burning rage! I'm a shower girl and partner prefers a bath, so doing one or the other won't work for us. It's also a small flat so only one bathroom!

Are foldable screens any good, I can imagine they leak a lot! Any other smart solutions for this sort of problem?

Thanks all Grin

we had the same.

can you put up a photo of the shower head and holder?

we had to get a new one and until then had to keep holding the showerhead in our hands to avoid what you describe.

I don't think those fixed shower screens are very good tbh. we added a telescope pole & shower curtain.

If I understand everything you've written, I think you should replace your shower head with a waterfall one like you mentioned. That may solve your problem.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 18/07/2021 11:33

We’ve had foldable shower screens before and they’ve been quite good, but with very high water pressure may not solve your problem.

Deux · 18/07/2021 11:41

Try replacing the shower head that’s attached to the hose. You can get them with variable sprays. I have one by a brand called Waterpik and it’s excellent.

Deux · 18/07/2021 11:43

Also i think your DP might have to tolerate a shower curtain in the short term. You can put up a telescopic rail and not all shower curtains do that ballooning thing.

We have a solid, non moving screen on one half of the bath, then a folding one coming form the other side which meets the solid screen. Yes, changing the shower head will help, but being able to enclose the whole bath is the only way to ensure no water leaks out.

EverythingDelegated · 18/07/2021 11:49

We have a shower curtain over ours, it does the job so long as everyone remembers to pull it along completely and leave it entirely tucked inside the bath while its drying. Takes up less space / gets less in the way than any sort of glass screen. We have a diagonal lift down type head, I don't like the waterfall ones personally as find the hose type useful when cleaning the bath, rinsing off body scrub and it's also easier to avoid having the water run over your head when not washing hair.

It just sounds like the angle of the shower head needs to be angled differently.

JaffacakeJanine · 18/07/2021 13:21

Thanks for the responses everybody!

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor
I tried angling it differently this morning and it did improve things (although now it floods the window sill instead Grin) I'm mostly worried about guests because I can imagine them adjusting the shower and having the flood problem! It's workable for now but I'm wondering longer term if there is a way to totally avoid it

@Deux yes I think this is a good shout in changing the shower head as it goes from zero to crazy for water pressure!

yeah, get another one.
with a curved handle and round head. bonus points for water saver.
you can get decent ones for around 20£ in a diy store and you just screw it on to the existing hose.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2021 13:33

Oh yeah, that's why , just get a new shower head, easy peasySmile

burritofan · 18/07/2021 13:37

Shower screens are a scam, curtains all the way imo, he’ll just have to suffer.

jackstini · 18/07/2021 13:38

We've got a folding screen & no leakage. I do like how it folds back out of the way - similar to this one www.livinghouse.co.uk/acatalog/Luxury-Folding-Bath-Shower-Screen.html

soooooooG · 18/07/2021 13:39

We have a rain head shower and a separate one for shampooing children/dogs that can be moved

@burritofan he very dramatically said "I'd rather the room floods than get a shower curtain" 🤣🤣🤣 we had a slightly traumatic experience in the last place with a shower curtain continually breaking and being a nuisance (also flooding the room, gah! Maybe I'm cursed!)

JaffacakeJanine · 18/07/2021 13:45

@soooooooG does the waterfall one keep the water splashing to a minimum? I've never had or used one so curious!

Zinnia · 18/07/2021 13:54

What @Catmummyof2 said.

Rule of thumb is that the larger the shower head, the more diffuse the spray, ie the pressure is reduced as there are more holes to push the water through, IYSWIM.

You can get nice shower curtains these days (mine is H&M Home).

SecretOfChange · 18/07/2021 14:20

OMG that is EVIL!!! Replace the shower head and be sensible. We had a waterfall massive shower head in the previous rental and it was ok but still splashing if not careful tbh. What you posted above is horrendous.

JaffacakeJanine · 18/07/2021 19:15

@SecretOfChange 🤣🤣🤣 I think definite consensus will be to get a larger shower head!

Soontobe60 · 18/07/2021 19:19

Can we have a photo of the other end of the shower, ie where it’s attached to the wall.

Polmuggle · 18/07/2021 19:25

OP am I being dim? Why can't you just point the shower head down so water kits the floor of the bath inside of the screen?

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 18/07/2021 23:50

Definitiely what other PPs say, get a new showerhead. It can be quite cheap and no plumber required to fit it. Waterfall type would definitely diffuse the jets, but water will still bounce off your body, so you do need a screen or curtain. If you go for a screen, make sure it's either foldable or can pivot away from the bath, otherwise you'll have to climb into the bath every time you need to clear the tiles and taps.
