I don't want harsh led spot lights really I'd like softish lighting but actually specifically light for cooking to come from lighting under the cabinets.
I really am not sure keen on spot lights but the ceiling is quite low so it could not accommodate a pendant light I don't think

I have both spotlights which are on a dimmer-switch, and also a strip cord of led lights hidden under the wall cabinets that are also on a (separate) dimmer switch. So when I want bright lighting for cookery I can have it, but last thing at night when I am pottering about feeding the cat etc I just have the latter on its lowest setting so it's not too bright. Fir the spot lights you can choose different spectra and go for a warmer yellower balance rather than a harsher whiter version. I wouldn't recommend getting any kind of pendant lighting in a kitchen, it would just get greasy and look awful.

You can get 'warm white' LEDs as opposed to 'cool white'.
Or even better, some of the smart lights do both and you can adjust the whiteness as well as how bright they are. The cool shades are brighter so useful for fiddly chopping or icing a cake etc., but then switch back to warm and / or adjust the brightness for when you're just pootling around making a coffee or sitting eating dinner etc.
Have a look at IKEA - they have a kit that is awesome for kitchen ceiling lights (we paired ours with a simple track from Screwfix but you can also get recessed ceiling lights for the spot bulbs that sit in the ceiling - see attached photos). Neither take up much height.

IKEA also does smart cabinet lighting but I think you need the ceiling lights to see properly TBH. The cabinet lights are a nice addition rather than an 'instead'.

Anyway, this is the kit from IKEA for the ceiling spotlight bulbs

Brilliant thank you, I have been scarred buying Xmas lights that were so bright they could be seen in space, outdoor lights and some indoor lights.
I want the main lights under cabinets for cooking but more mood lighting for the main lights.

Is it hard /expensive to get dimmer switch

I had these undercupboard lights put in (those with more patience and nous than I have could probably do it themselves) www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/KLL5WW.html

They're very slim, you can choose warm rather than cool white light options, they have their own dimmer switch. You can boot up the whole 'run' of lights at once, or switch them on singly.

TLC has a horrible website, but very knowledgeable staff.

I've seen just table lamps used quite effectively in kitchens for more mood/task lighting. I wouldn't have space on my worktops for that (I've got ceiling spotlights as well - would like to have these on a dimmer too but apparently not easy to do, dunno). Also, if you have a cooker hood, don't forget that light - I find it makes a big difference in my kitchen, much easier to cook with a light directly over the hob!

You couldn't just have the under cupboard lights as the only lighting source though. The room would be far too dim. You could put the same led strips on top of the cupboards between cabinet and ceiling for a bit more light, and the in-cabinet lights with translucent doors, but I'm not convinced that would be enough.

Does anyone else have mood lighting that's not harsh in the kitchen

I have seen LEDs that are like sunlight. So not super white or yellow but a nice compromise for a kitchen or bathroom Wink (and I personally prefer yellow lights for the rest of the house)

I disagree - we have a high ceiling with warm white LED spots. There are daylight LED strip lights under the wall cabinets. The under cabinet lights are plenty bright enough on their own for a lot of things without being too bright.

They are apparently called full spectrum LEDs

@WeAreTheHeroes has an excellent point! I would probably for for something like that. I lived in rented accommodation before that had that and a lot of times we only turned on the undercabinet lights
