Pull out kitchen shelves

I'm starting to plan a new kitchen and would need to have 2 larder units side by side going into the corner, the larder would be one space internally with these shelves that pull out (hopefully picture has attached).
Does anyone have any experience of these, i think they could be really practical in terms of making use of the space but you obviously can't stack stuff so wonder if they'll be an expensive mistake.
What do you keep on yours, can they take much weight. Thanks

I strongly recommend the "Le Mans" type

they do not rattle like the wire cage pull-out type, and I find them easier to use.

I think they are named after the shape of a motor racing track, so they can swing past the edges of the base unit.

PigletJohn · 17/07/2021 12:35

max weight 20kg per shelf

max total 40kg per unit

Hafele but other brands are available. You must get the right size.

PigletJohn · 17/07/2021 12:39

you say "2 larder units side by side going into the corner, "

but you need a unit that is, e,g. 1000mm wide, not two units 500mm wide.

You can order units made to measure in a practically unlimited range of sizes and colours to match your units. You can order "L" shaped corner units. You order doors from your kitchen supplier separately to match the other doors in your kitchen.

A unit as large as that will be very heavy and normally delivered ready to assemble. It would be prone to damage if carried about ready-assembled.

We've got ones like the one in the picture. You have to load them just right. Too light and they ping around and everything falls down the back and the door falls off; too heavy and they catch and the door falls off. And there's a mouse sized hole when the door is on and shut. I wouldn't get them again- there must be a better way to use the corner space.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 17/07/2021 12:43

Yes the le mans is the type we want, we've been told the metal basket type that kind of fold out are not available on 600 units only 300 or 400 units.
Pleased they take some weight.

where is you mouse hole, Sparrows?

my door never falls off

they are not successful if the sizing is wrong.

Do you have them now? What do you store on them, I wanted to use the double larder space for food but thought we won't really get much on them with not being able to stack. Thought perhaps small appliances instead.

PigletJohn like this, excuse the rubbish drawing, I'm trying to find a new design, had to abandon the original plan because it was too expensive to create the new room and I'm struggling to make use of this corner if I don't have this style of larder

OK. Instead of saying "connecting larders" say "wide full-height cabinet

If you put two units together, their sides would be in the way.

Because the Lem Mans stands on the floor of the unit, I have only seen them in units about 700mm high. Possibly there is an alternative for a higher cabinet but you would need to ask the manufacturer of the device (not the vendor of the kitchen)

There is another very nice design for swing-out shelves, but I have only seen it in a single-width cabinet, either 600mm or 500mm.

the shelves come out when you open the door

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 17/07/2021 13:37

Oh thank you, that's interesting, I've seen them in the showroom in a full height unit except for the top shelf, that was a fixed shelf.
I originally had 2 separate full height larder units her with a 60% door which opened over the worktop but that means they'd be no space for wall units. I've seen those baskets you linked, I was told they wouldn't work in the size of unit.
I think it's the le mans or rethink the entire corner configuration, which is why I'm Interested in what people store on them to see if it would be a waste of space/money.

you could perhaps have a base unit with Le Mans in the corner, and a dresser unit above?

there is a kessebohmer swing down kitchen shelf for wall units that pull down the top shelf by about a foot if you are not very tall. I would cetainly get the two-shelf version.

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 17/07/2021 14:16

Pop your proposed kitchen design up on here. There are lots of MNers with great ideas that might have a solution to make better use of that corner.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 17/07/2021 17:16

foof I'll get it drawn up and pop it on, it's just a roughly drawn plan at the moment

We have ones like the picture - currently housing tins, jars and reasonably heavy stuff, and doing fine 👍🏻

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 17/07/2021 22:27

Plan, hand drawn to scale Blush abandoned the difficult to access larder and replaced with lower corner unit and then wall units coming round the corner, wall units are the dotted lines along the top line, haven't looked at sizes for these yet.

I think having a larder unit stood up on its own where you have it would look really odd.
Do you need the peninsular? I think do away with those cupboards ( 300 , and cupboards in the peninsula ) then you could probably fit 2 x 500 larder units there next to the range or maybe a 900 range then a small unit such as a wine rack and then the two larder units ?

PigletJohn · 17/07/2021 23:37

I think the L shape base corner unit will be OK, and, with double doors, you can get your head and shoulders inside to reach the back (though the doors look rather small in your drawing)

The turntables are handy, though a bit wasteful of space.

Things at the back of corner units tend to be out of sight, out of reach, and out of mind.

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 18/07/2021 10:39

winnie I thought it could look odd, I originally wanted it to mirror the other side, so look like 2 larder units with the le mans pull out shelves inside but I'm not sure I'll be able to get enough on them.
I don't think I could put the larder units next to the range because it would place them on the chimney breast I feel it would feel imposing/repressive when you walk in the door, unless they we're half depth maybe.
The peninsula, I'm quite keen to have some seating somewhere, I'm fed up of always being in the kitchen on my own.
We had planned to create a amazing social kitchen knocking 2 rooms into 1 but as the quotes have come in we just can't afford it.
The 100cm range, we already have, so has to stay Smile

pigletjohn
The L shape in the top left, we have a couple of these in current kitchen and they work well and are pretty accessible, the doors on the drawing are 30cm which is the same as my current ones.
The base cupboard in the top right corner of my drawing would be a straight cupboard and have a single 40cm door perhaps with internal storage to help get to the rear. It's this corner I'm struggling with, would prefer the look of the wide full height cabinet. I am appreciating your suggestions

We've got them. They are great!

De88 · 20/07/2021 00:09

Yep we've got them, almost identical to the pics but bigger. Ours are heavily heavily laden with stacks of plates, bowls, serving plates etc for a family of 6. They squeak when fully loaded but that doesn't last long as everything gets used again... they're great. Been in nearly 5 years and no trouble at all.

StapMe · 20/07/2021 00:26

Have you thought about having the larder diagonally across the corner? Look at Wickes walk in larders. Then you can arrange the shelving to suit, won't need pull outs or swing outs. My Dad has something like this. Loads of room, and you can see everything on the shelves.

thelegohooverer · 20/07/2021 08:51

I’ve had two types of corner unit over the years, and I think I’d choose either over the pop out kind which just doesn’t strike me as very durable.

The carousel type wastes space and gets cobwebby down the back, and is a finger trap for small children. But you can easily get to everything.

The shelves-only type was surprisingly practical. I used a lazy Susan turntable in the corner and baskets on either side. I think it would have been more space efficient to store pots and pans there but I had to use it as a pantry.

I think corner drawers would be most practical of all, especially storing food as you could just drop new things behind older ones without having to pull at and rearrange things.

the wickes walk-in larder is fantastic. I only regret that presence of windows and ducts near the corners prevents me having one.

Previous (older) house had an actual pantry, with stone floor, shelves, hooks, small shaded window. Great.

Thank you everyone, appreciate all thoughts.
I have seen the corner larder actually but hadn't considered it for this design, when we were doing a different plan for a different room we looked and we were told they didn't do that unit in our range but will explore further, dh really liked them.
thelego we have a cupboard like your third pic and they do hold alot of stuff, we have tubs in ours too for easy access.
Designer has done the first draft without the double 'le mans' larder.
