TV Licence investigation

Does anyone here know the position on tv licensing if the house is unoccupied and gutted? Builders are in and the house is down to the bone.

Just opened a letter addressed to 'The Present Occupiers' saying that the house is now under investigation?!

This house won't be occupied until at least Winter.

www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ100

Just fill this in. They can investigate if they want, if they come round they'll see it's obvious nobody is living there or watching tv there.

WeAreTheHeroes · 17/07/2021 08:39

There isn't an occupier is there? I really wouldn't worry, but if the letter says to contact them if you think they are wrong then you could do so.

BlackAlys · 17/07/2021 09:07

No occupier and should they visit, they'll see a skeleton of walls only!

I'll fill in the form. Thank you!

I filled out a form informing TV Licensing the property was unoccupied as we’re having renovations done and haven’t heard from them since. I’m sure once you let them know they won’t take it further.

Just ignore them. If anyone turns up they will see that's the case.

We had them come for years for a derelict building on our farm. We gave up responding to them because it only worked for 6 months each time and then it started again. Now we just chuck them in the bin when they come. No one has ever been to 'investigate'.

I also thought they had been told to stop sending threatening sounding letters for some reason.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 17/07/2021 11:19

It's bollocks. They send these randomly to any address without a license, to scare people into buying one.

Just chuck it in the bin.

TheQueef · 17/07/2021 11:23

Ignore them.
Responding only services their completely unreasonable pestering.
There is no one watching tv there so nobody to try and prosecute.

RuthTopp · 17/07/2021 11:26

I am not married to my oh , the tv licence is in my name. When he ordered us a new tv a letter arrived saying he was watching tv and did not have a licence and could be prosecuted .
Tbh I would ignore as it would be obvious that the house is not habitable.

If the house is unoccupied, just call them and tell them. My (fully furnished - including TV) flat was unoccupied when I was living overseas. I got a letter saying I didn't have a TV licence etc. I called them and explained the situation. A very pleasant man said he'd mark it unoccupied for a year and when the letters started in a year's time, just give them another call if my situation hadn't changed. So all very straightforward and sorted with one quick call.

QueenStromba · 17/07/2021 11:45

Just ignore them. They cycle through half a dozen letters with varying levels of threatening overtones but never actually visit the property. I used to fill in the form but I stopped bothering when the letters started up again within a few months. Now I just let them waste their postage.

40somethingJBJ · 17/07/2021 13:08

I’ve just had this whilst doing up my late dad’s bungalow. I informed them of his death and they still proceeded to send threatening letter, so I just binned them all and didn’t respond.

OneHundredTrees · 17/07/2021 13:36

Just ignore them. I hate the threatening language and tone they use.

We get letters still even after saying we don't watch TV and they send someone around every 2 months or so as part of the 'investigation'. I just shut the door as soon as I realise it's them. They're such bullies.

BlackAlys · 17/07/2021 14:48

I've been online but won't hesitate to bin any more letters.

Only ever watch the news so may switch to satellite news. Stuff them.

I wouldn't even bother contacting them. Noone is watching TV there so let them 'investigate'.

I wish they wouldn't send these standard threatening letters as letter number 1. When my DF died one if those threatening letters was sent to the address where my elderly DM still lived. This was as a result of (professional) executors telling the licencing people that DF had died. As they were both well over the age to qualify for a free TV licence (when they were a thing!) it hadn't even occurred to us that we needed to apply for a new one for DM. The letter sent my bereaved mother into a blind panic. One quick phone call and they dispatched a new licence in her name FOC but it would all have been a lot less stressful if they'd just sent a letter saying there was now no licence for the property, please tick here for reason why and ask if new licence required (and if not why not). Going straight for the jugular is an unpleasant tactic.
