Oven selection

We are in the process of planning a kitchen refit. Our current kitchen was MFI (remember them? 😁) and we are almost certainly going for a small local bespoke company with a shaker style painted kitchen.

We need to decide on appliances. I’m not a fan of range cookers, as I’m getting older and want eye level. So we will likely go for two eye level ovens, one with a grill, possibly a microwave combo. The kitchen company has suggested a Neff steam oven for one of them. I’ve no experience of steam ovens at all so wondered if the hive mind might have some opinions, or suggestions for brands.

I have to say I’m swayed toward Neff because of the hide and slide function but open to suggestions. Thanks all.

I have a hide and slide and I love it! No experience of a steam oven though.

My other oven is a Neff combi one, which is great, but doesn't have a hide and slide door - I really wish it did.

RestingPandaFace · 16/07/2021 21:15

Steam ovens are handy, but you won’t miss it if you aren’t used to it, and to be honest it’s another thing to go wrong.

I do like Neff ovens though, very even cooking and quick to heat up so I’d say go for a Neff.

Locationlocationfan · 16/07/2021 21:24

Thanks both. The quote is for two Neff ovens, one steam slide and hide, one pyro slide and hide. I think I’ll need to go somewhere to look at them to get an idea of sizes etc.

My mum got a neff oven a few weeks ago but used a thermometer in it as she was struggling with roast potatoes cooking and everything taking ages. It’s not getting up to temperature. I’ve never heard a bad thing about neff ovens but at £900 she really expected better and is really disappointed having always had hotpoint before. We’re planning a new kitchen within the next couple of years and it’s put me off to be honest.

The Samsung Dual Cook Flex ovens look very nifty and seem to be well reviewed.

Personally I wouldn’t go for one with an integrated microwave - we had one in our old house and they are small and fiddly. If you’ve got the space put your MW elsewhere, e.g. utility.

We’re just finishing our kitchen renovation and went for Siemens ovens - one steam and one regular. I’m waiting for the electrician to come and sign off all our new circuits on Monday so we can try them out.

Locationlocationfan · 16/07/2021 22:20

Thanks @jaundicedoutlook that is useful. I think they have quoted for no microwave and as we already have one (not hugely used but useful for heating things up from time to time) we might fit that in the breakfast cupboard or indeed the utility room.

I've got one full size neff pyrolytic oven and one neff pyrolytic compact combination oven obviously with a microwave. I'm pleased with them both. I have no issues with the microwave and like having the extra workspace. I wouldn't put it in the utility room as I use it numerous times a day for heating milk for coffee and cereals.

rosesarered321 · 16/07/2021 22:30

I did consider the steam oven but didn't think I'd use it much after the initial novelty.

CasperGutman · 16/07/2021 23:24

We've got one Neff double oven, plus a built in standard microwave. Anything more lavish, e.g. two separate single ovens, a steam oven or a combination microwave/oven/grill seems a bit pointless. We almost never even use both ovens at once.

I would consider one of the slide-and-hide ones if we didn't have much space around where theoven door opened - especially with an under counter one - but in our kitchen the oven is out of the way and with plenty of room around it so there's no need.

chillichoclove · 16/07/2021 23:24

I loved my hide and slide but always had to add 10-20 degrees to get the right temp for neff 🤷‍♀️

Complain that’s not right for Neff. Never had a bad experience with one phone their CS
Livingintheclouds · 17/07/2021 00:16

I had a steam oven (and a normal one) inherited by previous owners. They never used it. And in 8 years neither, did I.

Locationlocationfan · 17/07/2021 09:31

Interesting, not many people used the steam oven it seems. I do use both of my current ovens at times, I love to cook and when cooking for friends use both sometimes. I’ll try to find a showroom to go have a look before we have our planning appointment with the kitchen maker. It’s all very exciting though!

I love my Quooker! It was top of the list when we had our kitchen done Grin

Yes a Quooker is already on the list, we love a cup of tea here so it’ll be a welcome addition. Friends with them all love them so I’m hoping we will too and I love the fact it creates a bit more kitchen surface.
@Locationlocationfanif you have room, I can recommend a Butler’s pantry…
Just had this done in ours - can’t wait to start using it when they’re finally done next week.

But our fitter advised us not to put the toaster in there - it might cause stains over time even if you’re very careful about not burning your toast!

BIWI · 17/07/2021 11:49

@LittleOverWhelmed oh yes, the cost is stupid. But as we were having a new extension and everything from scratch, it was a drop in the ocean, relatively speaking!

We have just replaced our oven, I was tempted by Neff hide & slide, however the expense & bad reviews put me off, decided on Bosch oven & induction hob, very happy with my choice.

Locationlocationfan · 17/07/2021 13:42

@LittleOverWhelmed I love your Butler’s pantry, and yes that is also on our list. We have an initial quote after a visit and a chat, but are off to see the plans in a couple of weeks. We don’t use our toaster much, so I’m happy to pull it out as needed, but I like the idea of hiding it.

I haven’t read many of the reviews yet, but will definitely do so before buying. Interestingly @Roselilly36 Bosch and Neff are made by the same parent company. We’ve always been Bosch fans in the past but not bought Neff before.
