Keeping track of extra costs of a build.

Our build has started and we are already finding little costs we weren’t necessarily expecting, like needing a fire rated door rather than re-using one we have. All little niggles in the grand scheme of things.
Anyway, does anyone have a good way of tracking these costs, as we do need to stick to a budget? My husband has suggested a spreadsheet but neither of us have used one before so looking for a little advice really. Or a better way of doing things. Thanks.

Spreadsheet is best.
We used one for a renovation and it really kept us on top of things.

Do you have a quantity surveyor?

Thanks. Any tips on how to use one to the nest we can? No, should we?!

Are you doing a complete new house build?

Oh gosh no! Sorry. Just an extension. But it’s quite substantial.

I wouldn’t worry about not having a QS I’m one and I can’t think of another QS I know who does any domestic work apart from complete builds.
Spreadsheet is definitely the best way (of course the QS would say that…) they really are very easy to use for just making a basic list in one column and prices in the next
