Japanese toilet and bathtub

Cissyandflora · 15/07/2021 19:34

I’m having a bathroom remodel in the next year. I’m very keen on the Japanese style ‘smart’ toilets. Does anyone have one?
I’m also interested in getting a Japanese style tub. I’ve looked at omnitubs but seen some poor reviews.
Has anyone got any of this fancy stuff and can you recommend?
Thank you!

@hyperbole001 thank you for that link- looks fab. I can’t quote your post for some reason (still haven’t worked out why that happens sometimes). It’s really great to get your recommendation because I’m still in the planning stage and want to get this right.

I like that it’s off the floor and I’m looking for the German hanging system that yours has. Grohe.

My home is a tip. Mid renovation and at a standstill. Planning my luxurious bits and bobs is keeping me going.

I’ve seen some toto toilets with a 12k price tag. Very strange. Others are much cheaper. What could cost that much more?

Think carefully about the size of the tub and who will use it.
I'm not tall but find them cramped - it's a sitting position rather than a lying position and I suspect taller people have to tuck up legs. Having used them in hotels, I wouldn't have at home.

That’s good to know. Thank you. I’ll try to get the biggest that the space will allow. I don’t want anyone to feel cramped. I haven’t actually used one but I do love hot tubs and I’m thinking it would be like that.

@Houseplantmad

I’ve got a Japanese loo (a European version actually). After a trip there two years ago we had one put in as our downstairs loo recently. I love it. Would also have a bathtub too but the loo will have to do for now. I figure if I get too decrepit to go up the stairs I’ll at least have sparkling front and back bottoms. It’s a Vitra V care comfort smart toilet from a company called bidet shower. I think it’s a much better design than the Japanese ones and has a remote control rather than the side handle with controls. Doesn’t have the sound effects to disguise noises though Grin If you’re in London and want to try a Japanese loo, visit Japan House at High Street Kensington!
Thank you- I will look your model up now. I’ve used the loos in hotels in Asia. I love the ones that have the sensor and open on their own! I love a bit of tech basically.

@Houseplantmad I’m looking it up now. I’m thinking what fun could be had with that remote control when you have a guest visiting.

You can't quote post if the post you're trying to quote post, already quote posted... if that makes sense!

I wanted a sleek design and a wall hung toilet which is why I opted for this one. Also, I wanted a separate remote rather than the armrest style which I experienced when travelling in Japan.

My cistern is Grohe as you've noted, as is the flush plate. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase though apparently the hose needs the filter changed every so often and I haven't gotten round to doing this yet.

I was also in the same boat as you - rented all my life and last year finally managed to purchase my own smallish space, deciding I wanted to make up for the time I spent living in bog standard house-shares!

Good luck with your reno plans!

Houseplantmad · 16/07/2021 13:29

@Cissyandflora yes the lid opens when you approach it and there is a further button on remote to lift seat and put it and lid down again.
We don’t tell people who have come in and you know when they’re using it from the squeals etc.

Other features
Seat warmer - cold to hot
Water temperature adjuster
Oscillating spray - does back and front at same time
Spray strength
Spray location
Drier and drier temp adjustment

There are various cleaning programmes too. I looked at the more basic model but decided I wanted as many features as possible!

DD spends hours in there sitting on the warm seat. DS spends hours in there washing god knows what but much more thoroughly than his teeth ever get.

We've had Hyundai and Toshiba. Currently have a Coway. They don't last forever, we've replaced them about every 5 years. All models I've ever seen have a remote option as well as that stupid by the seat option.

I liked the Toshiba the best but it's off the market here or was. Coway have the best reviews over all.

I presume you’re replacing the seat unit rather than the actual pan is that right?

DMIL has a 'smart' toilet. DH loves the warm seat; I hate it It's too reminiscent of the previous person having sat on the toilet for so long, they made it warm Envy

Can you switch the smart function off? As a guest in a house with one of these I'd leave rather than have to use it, unless it can be turned off.

Why wouldn’t you like it? You wouldn’t have to be washed if you didn’t want. It’s just a normal toilet if you don’t want the functions.

We have a Toto, cost about £2600 inc. pan. It’s the basic version with heated seat, sprayer thing and dryer with a remote control. Really really love it, it’s the best thing we got when we renovated. You can spend £10k plus if you get all the extras e.g. loo seat that raises as you approach etc but I’m happy with the basic.

Thank you. Yes I think I want the whole works! Toto seems to be popular in U.K.

bumping a zombie thread.

Things have come on a bit, can anyone report back on their smart loo?

I am trying to decide whether to get 1x Vitra V Care Comfort model, or for the same price, get 2x Purificare. Both of these loos are mentioned on this thread.

The only differences I can see is that Vitra has deodorisation (but no nightlight).

All info gratefully received.

hyperbole001 · 28/02/2024 16:50

Hi! Have had mine (puricare) for 4 years now, haven't had any issues. Though I haven't had the filter changed and I recall reading somewhere that this needed to be done...

everythingwillpass · 21/03/2024 20:48

TY. I ordered the puricare one!

We have the Duravit Sensowash (Starck F model).

Mostly I just preferred the design aesthetic to the other smart toilets. It works very well, no complaints so far. It does self-clean so I can’t see that there is really any issue with hygiene. Cleaning with water seems so much better than shoving loads of paper down the bog..

We wouldn't go back to standard toilets after having the smart toilets fitted (6 years old and no problems with them). I feel uncomfortably dirty if I get caught short, or stay away from home where there isn't the facility to hose my butt thoroughly after number two. It's one of those pleasures that gets hard to be without once you've had them...

Koulibiak · 22/03/2024 12:50

We have 3 Toto washlets, I love them. Sitting on a cold toilet seat feels like an affront now.

in answer to a question, yes you can turn them off. Friend’s young daughter has ASD and was freaked out by the noise and lights, so I just switched it off.

Toto has good customer service, one of our units developed a fault and they sent us an engineer and repaired it free of charge, even though outside guarantee period.
