Wardrobe depth

I am having a panic because I have ordered some fitted wardrobes but just realised the internal depth for hanging is only 50cm (between the rear wall and sliding doors).

Do people think this is sufficient? When I googled it most sites seem to suggest a minimum of 60cm. If anyone can tell me what depth they have it would be really appreciated.

IKEA pax is 58cm and I'm sure they know what they're doing. But that's probably not the answer you wanted

You may have to replace all your clothes hangers if they’re wider - we have a shallow built-in cupboard with a depth of 53cm and had to do so.

GiantKitten · 14/07/2021 11:59

You can still use wider hangers, you just have to angle them across (& lose a bit of space either end)

But if you can change what you’ve ordered without penalty, that would be the best thing.

custardbear · 14/07/2021 11:59

Can you adjust the order?

Indigopearl · 14/07/2021 12:01

Thank you both. Can I ask Comtesse how do you find using your wardrobe? Is it practical or do the clothes end up getting squashed?
We will mainly be hanging shirts and dresses so no big shoulder pads or coats.

Also, depending on the structure of the wardrobe, if you're limited on depth space you could have a few rails front to back direction maybe? Is it bespoke?

TheQueef · 14/07/2021 12:04

You could go with those fancy pants interior fitment sets that pull outwards.
Otherwise I would worry that even angling the hangars the sliding door will pull against the hanging clothes.

Indigopearl · 14/07/2021 12:04

Unfortunately we can't change it without huge upheaval as the frame for the wardrobe is built into the house. I am wondering about swapping the sliding doors for opening doors which may give a little more space.

Our current coat hangers are 45cm wide. Do people think these will fit ok?

It might be a bit tight for things like coats and you might have to buy smaller hangers.

We had the narrow version 50cm Pax wardrobes in the DC's nursery many moons ago. The rails ran from front to back. Is that an option? You could have both. L to R rails for smaller items and a back to front rail for coats/suits.

The width of the clothes on the hanger will be wider than 45cm if they have long sleeves. You need to hang different items and measure them at the widest point. Things like shirts would probably be okay but they might crease if the sleeves are pushed in. Stiffer, thicker fabric items like coats might not fit.

It’s pretty impractical to be honest - it’s in the spare bedroom so we just use it as overspill and can angle the hangers - but then you do lose a lot of usable space.

We have Platsa wardrobes from IKEA which are 55cm deep and it's only just wide enough for a standard hanger. I would see if you can get it changed OP.
Not sure why anyone would produce a wardrobe marginally too small for a hanger!
