It feels crazy that nearly £900k isn’t enough to buy a nice house with a garden in a safe area of London!

A complaint post really.

I know, first world problems. But we have almost £900k to spend and it won’t get us a house with a garden in any London neighbourhood we like (Blackheath, Hackney, Muswell Hill, Crouch End, East Dulwich). So we thought we’d look at Bath, Bristol, Hove, etc and it doesn’t even stretch very far there. Tiny terraces with tiny gardens - if that.

Why is property so expensive?!?! How can so many people afford excess £1m to spend on houses?

Inheritance

MinnieMountain · 13/07/2021 19:17

My sister lives in a house in East Dulwich. She owned a series of flats first. She and her DH have well paying jobs.

Chumleymouse · 13/07/2021 19:18

City prices are crazy. Around here 900k buy you a lot of house.

Blueskyemily · 13/07/2021 19:19

Try Wanstead?

Boomshakalack · 13/07/2021 19:19

Walthamstow or Leytonstone?

EugeniaGrace · 13/07/2021 19:20

If you want a lot of house and garden, then busy urban centres with flats and terraced houses are not the best place to look.

More vibe = less house

Monty27 · 13/07/2021 19:20

No city is entirely safe. And Blackheath certainly isn't.

Mind you, I’ve just looked on RightMove and there are at least 3 houses on my sister’s street either sold or for sale at under £900k.

ghislaine · 13/07/2021 19:25

If you’re considering East Dulwich, you could go just a bit further out to Forest Hill where you could get this: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110302154#/

PicsInRed · 13/07/2021 19:26

£900k only a tiny terrace in Bristol?! Only if you were trying to buy in Clifton.

What constitutes a "safe" area, such that only £900k will do the job?

Rightmove, Detached, Clifton +5 miles, you're welcome.

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 13/07/2021 19:28

Have you looked at anywhere in Bromley Borough? Somewhere like Petts Wood or Locksbottom you could probably get a semi and they're nice safe areas.

TedMullins · 13/07/2021 19:28

You’re clearly not looking hard enough because there are plenty of houses with gardens a lot under 900k in pleasant areas of London. Give me a minute, I’ll find you some

I did centre the search Clifton and that yielded pretty much nothing! (Well lots of grand and beautiful flats.) Then looked very slightly further away and the prices went down a bit. (Trouble is, Clifton is the only part I know to look!)

It's depressing isn't it? We want to buy in ED too and move from a flat to a house. But the size of the house you can buy for £875k just isn't all that much more floor space than a decent sized flat.

Propertyahhh · 13/07/2021 19:30

Safe probably isn’t the right word for London Grin

But places I felt safe, anyway!

Brockley? Honor Oak? Forest Hill?

kirinm · 13/07/2021 19:31

Redland, Cotham, Horfield, Montpelier, St Andrew's. Lots of very nice parts of Bristol

MinnieMountain · 13/07/2021 19:35

Redland in Bristol is nice. It’s been one of the good areas of Bristol for at least 20 years (as far back as my knowledge goes).

Comedycook · 13/07/2021 19:35

Look at Chislehurst, Bromley, Petts Wood, Lee, Hither Green...all nice places imo where you'll get a house for that budget.

3/4 beds on the Cator Estate in Blackheath…

Kipperandarthur · 13/07/2021 19:36

Further out will get you what you want. For instance Raynes Park, maybe Earlsfield. Definitely Beckenham.

poblwc · 13/07/2021 19:37

If you're looking at Bristol, try Southville, Bedminster, Bishopston, Redland. All nice areas and your money will go much further.

Hallyup6 · 13/07/2021 19:40

Because people continue to buy them at that price. It's ridiculous. 900k would get you a mansion near us. I have zero idea how anyone could afford one without being given a huge sum of money.

TedMullins · 13/07/2021 19:44

All of these are south east London:

This may be on the small side but it’s a lovely house and easy commute into central from Syndenham, plenty of green space nearby www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/110369660#/

Dated house that needs renovating but there’s a lot of space to make your own, lovely area Crystal Palace www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/109336145#/

FIVE BED SEMI, 675k, right next to a gorgeous park with a cafe, sailing club, cricket club, kids sports classes and two secondary schools in walking distance, south Norwood (just below Crystal Palace www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/79544835#/

Same area, three beds but big garden and nice and modern inside www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/107937032#/

You’re right below west dulwich here, garden, 600k www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/109033511#/

Forest Hill, just east of Dulwich, needs updating and the yard is a bit small but 690k www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/108544361#/

Three bed 675k between dulwich and herne hill which is a very bougie sought after area www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/109312871#/

A bit smaller but 700k between west Norwood and west dulwich www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/109028222#/
