Planning permission - how can I find out when an extension was built?

My NDN has just told me that he's planning a 6-metre single-storey extension to one side of his house. He will knock down an existing conservatory. The extension will be next to my garage.

He says it will be 6 metres long, and he doesn't need planning permission for it - but I think he does.

Planning Portal says that you need 'prior approval for any single-storey rear extensions that extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by over four and up to eight metres for detached houses'.

Our houses were built in the early 1970s. I have looked on our local council website to see when NDN's conservatory was built. Records only go back 30 years, and it's not included there. Can I email the council to find out?

NDN is sneaky. He told me last week that he didn't want the extension, that his wife did, and that he'll put it off as long as possible, but he told our old NDN that he had had plans drawn up for it even before they completed on the sale!! So I want to be sure I'm right and that he needs to get prior approval (is this the same as PP?) before I wake up one day and he's got diggers out there...

Worth checking you LA’s specific guidance, but I’m sure it was updated recently to allow for 6m in a semi and 8m on a detached house within permitted development, so no PP needed. Although there are still some caveats that might apply dependant on the size of existing land/house.

The prior approval process applies to extensions of 4-8m on detached houses or 3-6m on all others. It's not the same as planning permission.

You can find out more at www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200130/common_projects/17/extensions/2

Thanks both. I did check my council's planning requirements before posting! I

I emailed the council and my ndn needs prior approval for plans, so that's good.

I think the existing extension may have 'consumed' his permitted development (even if it wasn't the total allowance) and so any further development may now need PP even if the current extension is removed. BUT I may be wrong!
