Bungalow living ?

S101 · 25/11/2007 07:23

Always lived in houses before, but thinking of a bungalow this time. Needs work to it, and will have to extend at the back as there are that many bedrooms and kitchen not big enough.

Any pros and cons of living in a bungalow with children and do you think there will be a problem extending on the back, other people in the area have.

Any advice appreciated.

Can't comment on the extension but if you employed a building surveyor he could make enquiries direct to the council to find out the likelihood or you could make your own enquiries and try and get a planning or building control officer up to give you their thoughts. The only disadvantage i've found with living in a bungalow (for 5 yrs) is that you are never away from the children, they are always around and you can always hear them. This also works to an advantage though because you always know where they are! When out and about, stairs also become a bit of a novelty!

Can only agree with Babyblue's comments and just to add putting stuff away is much easier as you don't have to trudge up and down stairs!

Wouldn't even have thought of a bungalow before, but the gardens are fab. so long !!!

You usually get a gerat garden and because of this extending is never a problem with councils. They can look really stylish if done properly. They call it lateral living in all the lifestyle mags v gashionable atm.Good luck.

at not a) having to hoover stairs and b) not have piles of stuff top and bottom waiting to go either up or down.

i grew up in a bungalow - they're very, very common in the US where i'm from - and i love bungalows.

much easier to keep clean, IMO.

we live in one now, although only rented, but we really enjoy it.

we have two young children - 4 and nearly 2 - and it's just so much easier than up and down stairs all day.

I grew up in a bungalow and although we've moved around a fair bit we've only owned one house and I never really got used to having stairs. Everything I needed was always upstairs when I was down and downstairs when I was up.

I quite fancy having a bungalow the next time we move (we're in a flat atm). One thing to look out for when you extend is that bungalows often have a corridor down the middle off which all the bedroom doors open. So you should try to arrange the reception rooms so that they don't also open onto this corridor as any noise you make will bounce down the corridor and wake the kids up.

We just moved from a bungalow into 2 up 2 down.

I miss my bungalow, I don't miss my neighbours but I miss the house.

The bedrooms were not cramped next to each other [like here]. No stairs to run up and down.

I thought the house would be tidier if we had an upstairs but my dc just bring all the toys down anyway.

Yes bungalows are very nice, imo.

Bungalow is a no go on the one we wanted.

We offered way below the asking price as it needs to be completely gutted. Even though it had a huge garden. Not worth the price, told the agent and the agent agreed with me as well !!

We are continuing to look .
