Moving to DERBY from NORWICH

Hi everyone,

My first post on here:)
My family is looking to move to Derby early Next year. DP will be working as a GP and we've got a 5yo DD and 1yo DS. We are mainly moving because of Diversity, being a family of colour, DD is struggling with not having a good mix of kids in her school etc, especially 'those that look like her' and this is starting to have an adverse effect. We are particular about GOOD SCHOOLS (especially Primary), family friendly, peaceful/quiet areas with good multicultural mix and facilities...

I hope we find nice places that tick most (or all) of our boxes.
Suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone for your contributions so far. They've been really helpful.
I thought to let u know that we missed out on the allestree house.
What's Boulton moor like, please?
We found something we really like there, but I need to be sure that the area in itself fits our requirements. Thanks in advance.

Why would you do it to yourself? It’s awful.

DerbySHIRE maybe. But derby city, nooooo.

MaverickTee · 03/08/2021 07:05

@ZealAndArdour I'm not sure I understand your comment. Could you make it clear please?

Just that there are some really gorgeous areas of Derbyshire, but Derby city centre area not so much.

op Boulton Moor us not especially favoured. It's a big housing estate but on the edge of not the nicest area tho I think the shopping there is good, great parade of local shops.

Secondary schools are an issue unless the house is in Cheklaston catchment; Merrill and Noel-Baker are not the best.

Upside is you get a good deal if house for your money, as you have probably noticed.

MaverickTee · 05/08/2021 21:46

@Seainasive Found something I really like in Boulton moor. It's at the edge close to Chellaston. I'm just wondering if it is worth doing the viewing this week.

Hi @MaverickTee if it's the house I'm thinking of which came on this week on a road with a lucky number in it, then it'll be Noel Baker catchment. Noel Baker is not a desirable school.

maps.derby.gov.uk/WebMap/Mobile/map.aspx?origUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fmaps.derby.gov.uk%2Fwebmap%2FMap.aspx%3FMapName%3DPublicMaps if you click the stripes on the left you can do Local Knowledge which shows catchment areas for primaries and or secondaries.

It feels a bit odd that you've sought all this advice and have ignored most of the areas mentioned. I understand that some areas look like you get lots of house for your money and that's great if you're moving for space but if schools are a consideration you really need to do your homework.

Photo attached shows catchment border - Noel Baker in blue and Chellaston in orange.

Thank you @FakeFruitShoot
I haven't ignored the advice in any way, In fact I've based most of my search on that. I'm just seeking more clarity.
I reckon it makes sense to plan ahead, however I'm currently not particular about secondary schools, as my LOs are just 5 and 1.

I'll look up the catchment link. Thank you.

Aaah fair enough, I have always been a planner so have looked ahead for secondary schools from pre DC!

Also worth noting some bits of Boulton Moor are parish of Elvaston so pay council tax to Derbyshire not Derby city - probably minimal difference but I was round there yesterday qnd noticed the different bins Grin

Definitely nice houses and quiet roads though.

clary · 06/08/2021 08:52

But your 5yo will need a secondary school place in five or six years' time so I would certainly have that in mind OP. If you are in Boulton Moor and then in four years' want to move to Littleover, well, you might just wish you had gone there in the first place tbh.

DerbyshireMama · 07/08/2021 22:05

I'd avoid that area. "Boulton Moor" is just Alvaston. Rough.

MaverickTee · 08/08/2021 05:06

@DerbyshireMama that very was brief but very informative as well.

Thanks

I'd look outside the city, if the job doesn't require you live in Derby itself. I worked there for a while, and TBH hated the place . Oh had the same experience before I met him. Though this was many years ago now, and things may have changed, overall, I didn't find it friendly at all, I found it very insular, (though I hasten to say, not everyone, some of the people I met were great) and I've lived in a fair few cities in my time. But then I didn't have kids, and kids do introduce you to people and help you become part of the community, which I suspect makes a bit difference.

BlueMongoose · 08/08/2021 16:47

(big difference, not bit difference, of course, sorry)

CandyKittens · 08/11/2021 13:36

Hi @MaverickTee, how did you get on? I might be in the same position and could be moving from Plymouth next year with a 1 year old.
Did you find a place that you like within your budget and good area for schools?
Any advice is welcome as I started browsing at houses on zoopla already!
