Moved into our new house and our kitchen is mouldy

As thread title - not picked up on survey. 1950s semi, I would put the kitchen at 1970s to 1980s at the latest. Cupboards smelt off, and some had visible mould/ discolouration when emptied but it was not completely evident how bad it is until I took the shelves out - the back of the the units are spongy.

I’ve done a short term clean up job and left it to air, the shelves are going, but I don’t know whether to pull the backs out in the short term?

Have a builder coming to deal with something else next week, so will be asking advice then but asking the wisdom of mumsnet!

Feeling quite down about it - had planned to clean it up and put new doors / fronts on short term while we save to extend as it’s a tiny kitchen but the units are all odd sizes, so I’m going to have to suck it up and replace it.

The previous owners have some large bushes growing up the wall in front of the kitchen, so will be chopping them down to check for air bricks / ventilation situation but all advice and guidance will be gratefully received - we move in properly tomorrow and I am really worried about storing my kitchen goods short to medium term while we sort a new kitchen in a mouldy yuck pit…

I could just cry, I’m so tired.

Just seems to be that one wall is the issue, pigletjohn. I have reduced box-magedon in the kitchen and dining area now, so the next target area is the landing so I can take a proper look at the bathroom above the kitchen next, also so the builders can get into the loft on Monday.

And so I can wander round with them being helpless but also armed with pigletjohn level knowledge to fire at them to knock them off balance while trying to work out how to sort this in short to medium term. I’m really not a competent DIYer but I’m reasonably sensible having grown up in the 80s with parents who built and repaired everything so there are things I’m sucking my teeth over in horror. Like this beauty - again, going back to my survey report this is mentioned as something we might like to fix… 🤔

I also need to completely level the greenery to run a ladder up to that hopper to check it out as well, thanks - on the list too!

oh great.

Cracked and sunken concrete next to the gullies and downpipes.

You're the fifth this week.

Counter resets tomorrow.

Pssst it’s not even concrete… it’s off cuts of some sort? Not even lead flashing which I thought at first. No idea. I’ll take pics for your amusement tomorrow but your counter might be safe for now? It just lifts away, well one side does, the other bit I want gloves on before I rummage about with it.

I’ve hyper mobility in y wrists and fingers which is starting to tip over into soreness and stiffness / crap grip strength which makes being able to have at things with any effectiveness a bit pathetic so I suspect DH will have to come intervene with some bemusement tomorrow once I get stuck in the drains with my mini pry bar tool…
