Lead paint

Hi everyone. Driving myself a little crazy so hoping for some advice. We are trying to conceive and discovered lead paint in old architraves and door frames x 3 and skirting boards.

Long story short got a plan someone is coming in replacing frames and architraves (they were shot anyway and needed doing) and will get them to put another layer of paint on the skirtings etc. Also found round window frames and again needed to do the double glazing so getting that sorted too. All good.

My concern is when they come in how on earth am I going to manage lead dust not getting all over the house?! The architraves and door frames are going to be a rip it out job as will the windows but will this create a plume of lead dust? Are the builders going to be walking it round the house? I won’t be in when it happens and will obviously make sure they clean up/lay dust sheets etc but am I overreacting here? How much lead dust is too much?! Online research is just extremely vague or extremely scary and so I am struggling to understand the “real” risk here vs the perceived.l risk.

Any advice appreciated!

How are they going to control the lead dust? Do thry have to follow certain methods... An equivalent to asbestos essential sheets that keep exposure down? How much do they think is released? (have they monitored their staff exposure), what extra can then do (hepa filter hoovering etc)
I would be concerned, definitely not around while they do it and expect it to be cleaner afterwards than before

I've had architraves and skirting and window frames replaced (not lead paint related) and I don't recall thete being any dust at all. Paint is not going to disintegrate to that extent surely? Asbestos is different as it has fine fibres that get airborne.
But make whomever is doing it aware it has lead paint

If they were sanding the paint off I'd expect dust from the paint but most of the dust created will be from the wood, plaster or from behind the woodwork. The paint will chip but won't be clouds in the air. Provided they hoover it should be fine. Don't lick up the dust! Wink

Thank you for this, yeah the wood itself is testing for lead paint too but I think this is where it’s soaked in past lead so imagine that makes it slightly better!
