Qooker? Me: yes! Dh: NO!

I want an instant boiling water tap in our new kitchen. We have an old-fashioned boiler/tank thing in the staff kitchen at work, and I love it. Even better than the no waiting about for the kettle to boil, is the lack of grotty gritty limescale in your tea.

Dh absolutely rejects the idea of having one. He's worked in much newer buildings than me, with flashy, gizmo-filled staff kitchens. He says that the instant hot water taps there never made good tea and were always breaking down.

I think
a) He's wrong.
b) Maybe they were hot water taps, rather than boiling water taps.
c) He's wrong.

But then I've never had a cup of tea made from a Quooker, so what would I know?

How do I persuade him? (Or does he have a point?)

They are shit honestly don't bother. They had them installed at the church where I ran a community group, you could literally only make 1 hot cuppa at a time. Absolute waste of time.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 02/07/2021 22:14

I love our Quooker and it makes great tea. It did break down within a year but a hassle free, speedy replacement was provided. So your husband has a point but would still recommend. And love the extra counter space too.

minipie · 02/07/2021 22:16

You are right he is wrong.

We have a Quooker and I bloody love it. It can do 3litres of boiling water before needing a rest. No chunks of limescale (I had actually forgotten that used to happen with kettles). Instant boiling water when you need to cook pasta/veg in a hurry.

peachpearplum01 · 02/07/2021 22:16

We just got a quooker, I thought the same as your husband as we had them at work and they kept breaking. But I absolutely love it and it’s one of my fave things about our new kitchen .

SweetGrapes · 02/07/2021 22:17

We have a Grohe one. Instant duo red boiling water tap - something like that.
It's really good.
And it'll be as many cups of tea as the tank. We have a 3 litre and never run out so far.

Ozanj · 02/07/2021 22:17

The one at my last workplace always had an aftertaste because the filter was never changed enough.

CheshireCats · 02/07/2021 22:17

I have a Quettle tap. I have had it 3 years and it has never broken down. I absolutely love it, and would never be with a boiling tap again.

Perfectlystill · 02/07/2021 22:19

They are shit. We have them at work and they break all the time.

I would never get one.

Longdistance · 02/07/2021 22:22

We have one in our staff room. I really regret not getting one for my kitchen 5 years ago Sad
They’re really good. The amount of times I’ve had to stand there like a dick waiting for the kettle to boil to make dinner.

NakedAttraction · 02/07/2021 22:22

It’s another thing to go wrong, and then much more difficult than just buying a new kettle to sort out.

Laurie01 · 02/07/2021 22:23

He's wrong.
I have a quooker tap and love it.
It makes great tea.
You don't have to have a kettle and wire/plug on the top.
It's great when cooking and filling up pans.
He's wrong.

You're welcome x

Kentuki · 02/07/2021 22:23

Live my quooker

NakedAttraction · 02/07/2021 22:23

The amount of times I’ve had to stand there like a dick waiting for the kettle to boil to make dinner

I’d suggest you might need some counselling if you genuinely feel like a dick waiting two minutes for the kettle to boil in your own kitchen!

Kentuki · 02/07/2021 22:23

Love, even

Purplewithred · 02/07/2021 22:24

I have a Quooker, it is one of the best things I’ve ever invested in. Makes fab tea and has had one service in the 6 or 7 years we’ve had it. It’s completely different to those stupid hot water things you get in workplaces.

If you are nearby send DH in and I’ll make him a cuppa.

Chumleymouse · 02/07/2021 22:25

I never use boiling water, so I wouldn’t have one. Only time I use the kettle is to make some who’s working at the house a tea or coffee 👍

MilduraS · 02/07/2021 22:28

Do you live in a hard water area? Much more likely to break down if you do.

Ginger1982 · 02/07/2021 22:31

We have one and love it!

Muststopeating · 02/07/2021 22:35

The space you gain in worktop space you lose twice as much (probably more) in cabinet space under the sink, that's why I'm not having one.

They are also hideously expensive, both initially and for servicing etc (assuming you get a top brand thay actually does boiling water instead of 95C water).

Lastly, if you are getting an induction hob then the need to wait for the kettle to boil for cooking veg/pasta etc is moot. A good induction with boost function will bring cold water to the boil in about 1.5mins. Half the time of the average kettle.

If we had the space (we are installing a massive kitchen but I am very particular about immediately accessible space and what goes where) and the extra money (massive extension and full restructure so skint) and I'd ever tried a cup of tea from an actual Quooker then I would consider it.

Bur for now I'll buy myself a kettle and save £900+ and still have somewhere to keep my food recycling caddy.

Witchlight · 02/07/2021 22:45

I would take a bet that your DH’s work tap is not a Quooker, but a hot water tap. Quooker and some others do boiling water, others (usually cheaper) do very hot water - usually not so good for tea.

I have a Quooker and love it. It is something that would really irritate me if I had to do without it

Yes, as PP said, it does take up a significant amount of space under the sink. If cupboard space is at a premium, over worktop space you might want to reconsider.

Sparechange · 02/07/2021 22:48

All those saying you have them at work and they break down - are they actual Quooker taps?
Or Zip taps?

Our office zip taps break down all the time

But I wouldn’t be without a quooker again, it’s amazing (and one of the few that actually boils water to 100degs)

NiceGerbil · 02/07/2021 22:50

No.

They look exciting but

I bet they have to be serviced. Pita. Money.
If they go wrong I bet £££ to fix.
Changing all the different water canister thingys they show on the ads
Keeping water boiling 24/ 7 in case you want some can't be very eco friendly and would cost (prob not much though but still)

Kettles are awesome.

Blue5238 · 02/07/2021 22:57

They are certainly not cheaper than a kettle. But the convenience is brilliant.
Quooker in old house....no problems in 6 years before I moved. Franke now but only been in 2 years so far so harder to say.

Longdistance · 02/07/2021 23:00

We’ve had the work one for about 3 years. It broke down after we had a water shortage due to a burst pipe locally. It was perfectly fine before then.
It obviously has a high use with staff going in and out making drinks/soup. I didn’t think it was bad.

TheGenealogist · 02/07/2021 23:03

We have similar but it's an insinkerator one. Love it.

Loads of people always say that they don't work but they're mostly comparing heavy office use to a domestic setting.
