Neighbours noisy DIY

Hi all,

Want to know AIBU.

Neighbour on our street (3 doors down) is doing DIY in their garden, new fence, building summer house, a huge terrace area and new decking I think. They've been working on this for around 5 days, they start with power tools at around 7-8am through to 10-11pm at night. My partner and I are both working from home so hear it all day, and another neighbour has a very young baby.

Is it reasonable for them to be making such a noise for all of those hours? Not sure if I'm just being a grumpy neighbour or not!

Thanks x

Should have added, there are two of them doing the work, one starts in the morning and the other takes over mid afternoon. It looks like they aren't anywhere near finishing either Sad

I think between 8-6 is a more reasonable time.
Check your local council’s website for noise rules.

FelicityPike · 30/06/2021 20:53

I meant 9-6

ItsSnowJokes · 30/06/2021 20:54

I would say 8-8 is the maximum hours they should be working. I would not be happy after 8pm.

Aquarius94 · 30/06/2021 20:59

Thanks @FelicityPike @ItsSnowJokes

The morning isn't too much of an issue it's just the fact that it's till 10-11, and it's a lot to listen to a drill on and off for that period of time Grin we really feel for the couple with the young baby as they are directly next door, and they are a young couple who I don't think would say anything. Unfortunately the neighbours doing the DIY don't speak any English so not sure how we go about politely asking them to keep it down Blush

I think even those with limited English would understand if you asked them to stop in the evenings please. Presumably it won't go on much longer though.

Chumleymouse · 30/06/2021 21:18

The more hours they work on it per day the less days it should take them ( in theory) if your working outside and it’s dry it’s better to make the most of it. Let them crack on 👍

Aquarius94 · 30/06/2021 21:25

@Chumleymouse completely understand that, but if I was in their position knowing full well there was a 4 month old baby next door I just wouldn't be using drills and saws (also with music playing in between) at 10-11pm? I feel like that should be obvious to anyone.

We haven't really had anything to do with them but they always wave if we drive past and they clearly aren't rude people so I just thought trying to explain to them that it's not really fair on other neighbours to be making that much noise 11 hours a day until that time at night?

Well, they clearly are rude people because they don't give a fuck about the impact of their behaviour on anybody else as long as they get to do what they want.

If they cared, they wouldn't be doing it so I wouldn't expect them to stop if you spoke to them.

cherrytrismum · 30/06/2021 21:36

Are they doing it themselves or have builders in, rules for each are different. If workman can't start at 8-6pm, nothing on a Sunday or bank holidays. If they are doing it themselves, rules differ.

dopeyduck · 30/06/2021 21:43

8am is reasonable but tbf after 5/6pm I'd be annoyed too

Livingintheclouds · 30/06/2021 22:55

There are noise rules even for diyers. It differs between areas but generally 8-6pm Monday to Friday, 8-1pm Saturday, Sundays and holidays only in an emergency. Really their immediate neighbours should speak up, baby or no baby.
