If you’ve painted your ceiling the same colour as the walls…

Are you pleased you did it?

Did the room feel larger or smaller as a result? I keep reading that it will trick the eye into thinking the ceiling is higher as it can’t readily detect where the walls end and the ceiling starts. But then other articles suggest the opposite - that it will visually lower the ceiling and make the room feel smaller.

Interested to hear from anyone who’s done this.

Thanks. Smile

Absolutely yes. I've done it in a few rooms including the woodwork. To me it looks stylish & classy....I'll try and post a photo.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 30/06/2021 20:33

Here's my bedroom. All f&b copy (cornforth white) except the floor.

That would be great @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango. Thank you.

I do think it looks lovely but most of the pictures I’ve seen show enormous rooms. The one we’re doing is 12 x 12 feet and doesn’t have very high ceilings.

I think if it's a variation of white and you have high ceilings it looks great, in a colour and a standard room if looks quite dated. I was watching an old episode of house doctor from the nineties and she did it with a peach colour, it wasn't nice

alwaysoutnumbered · 30/06/2021 20:40

I have it in 4 rooms. Mostly dark colours one pale blue. I love it so much especially the dark colours.

alwaysoutnumbered · 30/06/2021 20:40

Totally standard rooms not particularly high ceilings

burritofan · 30/06/2021 20:42

I did it a very pale rose pink in a room with v fancy cornicing, a ceiling rose and shell-patterned Artex (not random swirls); did the fireplace, skirting, architrave and door too. It was GLORIOUS.

Another option I love if your house has the bones is a coloured ceiling and cornicing then white walls and skirting.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/06/2021 20:42

I've been wondering wether to do this in my bedroom which is magnolia but will go for an off white, when it's redecorated.

BakeOffRewatch · 30/06/2021 20:42

Depends on size, shape of room

I found a good info graphic once will try to find again

Is the ceiling the same colour as the walls here? It looks much lighter.
FlouncingBabooshka · 30/06/2021 20:49

I have bedroom envy @TangoWhiskyAlphaTango - beautiful room.

The colour for our walls is Peignoir. Wondering how dark it will read on a ceiling.

Those walls looks like they're painted a different colour from the ceiling? Is that just a trick of the light?
StormBaby · 30/06/2021 20:57

It 100% will make a room look bigger because you lose all the edges

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 30/06/2021 21:03

@pinkallsorts @palavah - No its all the same from skirting upwards including ceiling, makes it soooo much easier to paint too as no cutting in. Great for a novice like me! I am really pleased with it.

We've painted the ceiling of both our bathrooms in a dark colour, both small rooms, one is about 9'x9' and the other is 6'x6'.

The smaller bathroom's ceiling is painted navy, and the walls are wallpapered in a patterned wallpaper with a navy background. However the floor is a light ceramic tile and there is a skylight in the ceiling so the room gets a lot of light. The room was magnolia previously and it doesn't feel any smaller now.

The larger bathroom has the walls and ceiling painted in F&B bancha which is a very dark olive green. The room has 2 windows facing east and south so also gets a lot of light but has a dark vinyl flooring. The room had white walls before and it definitely feels cozier/smaller than it did before but that's OK. I can't say I particularly have an opinion about how high the ceiling seems, we have a period house so the ceilings aren't low though.

The other rooms in our house where the ceiling and walls are the same colour are all brilliant white, and the effect on how the ceiling recedes depends more on the complexity of the coving, those with a simple curved coving the boundary of the ceiling and walls does blur away, for the rooms with more decorative coving the boundary is more apparent.

Alannawhorideslikeaman · 30/06/2021 21:10

We haven't done exactly that, but we added a picture rail and painted above the picture rail and the ceiling the same colour. It's really raised the ceiling height and we think looks great.
We're in a 1970s semi so not the period for picture rails, but it has really transformed the room. We used Dulux Heritage (boathouse blue) below the picture rail, Dulux Heritage (Edelweiss white) for above the picture rail and woodwork (Matt for walls, eggshell for woodwork) and then had a ceiling paint colour matched to the edelweiss (for cost!). Looks much better than just a bog standard trade white on the ceiling and then edelweiss on the walls so glad we went to the effort of having it matched.

SinkGirl · 30/06/2021 21:14

Our house is all like this - downstairs is open plan, a sort of sage green and it looks lovely (or did before my twins got marks all over it). Bloody F&B.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/06/2021 21:16

we added a picture rail and painted above the picture rail and the ceiling the same colour. It's really raised the ceiling height and we think looks great.

See I think this always lowers the ceiling/makes a room look wider rather than taller. Our last house had this and we changed it and painted above the picture rail the same as below the picture rail and I think it helped emphasis how high the ceilings were.

So, maybe the moral of this story is do what you want and never mind what other people think.

Zinnia · 30/06/2021 21:31

Yes, do it. We have done in some rooms and wish I'd done others when we last decorated, a white ceiling with pale walls especially is a bit pointless. As @StormBaby says, it blurs the corners of the room to make it look bigger.

I think with darker colours you have to take a view on ceiling heights and the feeling you want for the room. We have our living room ceiling in a paler shade of the paint we have on the walls rather than white and I really like that approach too.

FlouncingBabooshka · 30/06/2021 21:59

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post. I think I’ll give it a go. I’ve really been wanting to try it - I think I just needed a little gentle, encouraging shove Smile

Gosh how interesting, it really looks different so that's great to know!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 30/06/2021 22:15

We have done it but also added coving to break it up - I loved it! Was a scary decision, but in the end it worked. Go for it!

WeAllHaveWings · 30/06/2021 22:17

Yes, did it in the 1980s with dulux apple white 🤣 in first flat which had tall ceilings and deep ornate cornice and ceiling mouldings. The ceiling was apple white and mouldings white. Took ages to do and was pleased with the result (in hindsight it was horrendous!)

Can't imagine it in the low ceiling house we now live in without mouldings, I think it would be like living in a box.

We did this in our bedroom with that exact colour and I love it! Standard ceiling height and probably 12 x 15. It's so relaxing and kind of elegant and I'd do it again if we ever move 😄
