Is it normal to get woken up a lot in a semi/terrace?

I've lived in 2 1930s semis, and in both cases I have frequently been woken up.

My current neighbours get up at 6am 7 days a week, and I quite often get woken by them. If they go downstairs and put the telly on I can hear it in my bedroom as clear as day. People talk about having a lie in at weekends and I find it depressing that I can't. I'm always tired.
I put some soundproofing in and it has hardly helped, because the sound seems to come through the floors.

Is this something most people joined with neighbours have to deal with??

It depends on when the house was built, I’m in a semi and I know when my neighbour puts the light on in the loo. When I sneeze she shouts ‘bless you’ luckily were really good friends. The houses are over a few hundred years old and I assume newer houses would be better?

Have you tried a fan, for white noise?
Ours is an 1890s mid-terrace, we don’t get much noise from next doors anyway but it’s great for smoothing over random internal noises like snoring, bathroom visits and doors closing.
In the summer we have tall tower fans all over the house, but even in the winter we keep small ones in the bedrooms, and it really helps.

I live in a 1950s semi. Our next door neighbour has a hearing aid so the tv is on very loudly. I got 3m earplugs and they were amazing but then I just got used to it. I grew up with 4 siblings so getting used to noise was needed

Live in a 90s semi and I rarely hear my neighbours. Occasionally the tv at night and the occasional loud sneeze but other than that, nothing. I hear the gobshites over the road who sit out front of their house shouting through every conversation more often.

I'm in a 1930s semi. I would have said the soundproofing was good but we've had new neighbours in the last 6 months now I can hear everything. The baby crying m, she is constantly "wooing" at the baby which does my head in, their dog ha ING mate night zoomies, the coffee machine wakes me up most days. Its awful now. Looking for a detached. The previous neighbours were basically silent, I do wonder how!

When we lived in a 1970’s ex-council terrace if it was really quiet at home you could hear next door talking, but they were quite a loud couple so that might have contributed!

Now in a 1930’s terrace, hardly hear a peep from either side unless the neighbours are shouting or partying. Perhaps the odd other noise. I’m sure those that are unused to terraces might hear more, sometimes I think we’re immune as we’re used to it.

Thinking about it, I can hear it when one of my neighbors sneezes loudly in their sitting room.... I only ever hear him, never his partner, who must also sneeze occasionally!

Yeah we get woken up at 5/6am by one side after being kept up til 12, sometimes 1 on the other side, who swear they’re just making normal amounts of noise while they pound up and down the stairs and slam every door, window and cupboard as part of their nightly routine. We did bite the bullet and ask for a little consideration after 11… that went down as well as you’d expect! Apparently I’m too sensitive and they’re just these chill, no-drama angels trying to live their lives.

Get a while noise machine and earplugs and get used to sleeping with the windows shut. Even then be prepared to wake up in a cold sweat because it’s 11.30pm and for umpteenth your neighbour is hurly individual wine bottles into the recycling and the sound of the glass smashing sounds like someone breaking in…

We have converted flats on one side and Thier kitchen backs on to their bedroom. Which would probably be ok if they didn't work shifts as it means their boiler comes on for showers at silly o'clock and they are preparing meals at all hours.

They've just move out and I'm hoping the next one's are quieter.

It's one of the reasons we are moving. Can only afford a semi detached but at least there's the option of a bedroom on a "free" side if needed.
